Hi All,

Just thought I'd drop my 2 pence worth in on these tyres.

I've got a LC GS Adventure and as a point of reference (as everyone has different opinions) I happen to think the Michelin Anakee is a pretty decent tyre. In-fact having tried the Pilot Road Trail (when I didn't want any off-road capabilities), the Conti XC70 (on a long trip of mixed dry riding), the Avon Trailrider (on mixed surfaces), after all of those I keep coming back to the Michelin Anakee, it just seems to work well on the GSA.

So why did I try the Rally STR's......well to be honest, I just liked the idea of them! I had some Angel ST's on a GSXR750 about 8 years ago and they should not of been as good as they were, being a touring tyre on a sports bike, I was easily able to get knee down and they were way better than my brain......so, as I hadn't tried any Pirelli tyres on the GSA I thought I'd give them ago.

Well with just over 2000 miles on the STR's I have to say I am VERY impressed.

Grip - They are exceptionally stable, and I had them put on during the 'Beast from the East', so can happily say they can handle any weather that is thrown at them! They are exceptionally confidence inspiring, perhaps too much so!!! The type of tyre that could see your ego overriding your talent! I have not used them off-road in any deep wet mud, but in gravel, loose damp dirt and grass they are happy as larry! I do not pretend to have ANY skills in the offroad department, but all the green lanes and BOAT's I've been down have been handled easily, far more confidence inspiring than the XC70's. On road they go anywhere I point them. I would class my riding as enthusiastic, and they aid that with feedback and stickiness.....I haven't yet wanted more tyre at any point.

Noise - yes they make noise, in fact its a high pitch whine at Continental Toll Road Speeds. It starts close to 70Mph. I wear custom earplugs but can easily say these are the loudest tyres I have tried so far, but the whine has reduced as they've worn in a bit.....it doesn't bother me, but some may hate it!

Longevity - I have just over 2k miles on them and the rear is yet to square off. On daily commuting I do 70miles 50% on motorway 50% on A/B roads. Off-road I do at weekends and as stated previously I am not a talented off-roader, so I need all the help I can get. The Rear tyre is just starting to show signs it could start to square, but as mentioned above, nothing yet. The front pretty much looks as good as new. So for longevity so far so good. I run them at the standard BMW advised pressures 2.5 & 2.9.

So, currently the STR's have overtaken the Anakee's as my preference tyre. Although only early days in this sets lifecycle, I can already see myself ordering more when they do wear out.

If you haven't tried the STR's I'd definitely put them on your short list if you want that 'go anywhere' tyre!

Enjoy and ride safe folks!

I have had Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres fitted since November and agree totally with your views. I've covered just under 4000 miles on them and reckon that I'll get another 2000 possibly 3000 out of the rear.

My rear (tyre) is fairly squared off after 4000kms.
I always run 36psi f and 42psi r

Are are a fantastic tyre and being squared off hasn't affected the handling........but it has uncovered a vulnerability that I had read about on Adventurerider, when the centre of the rear starts to square it exposes the section of tyre between the thread blocks and they are puncture prone.

My front is fine but the rear is getting replaced with a Scorpion Trail 2 for my Spanish trip in June.

Rear on my africa twin was very square and low on tread at about 2k miles! Not enough for me, I'll be trying something else next.

Tyres all down to weight and styles of riding, and road surfaces, nothing will be perfect, but as long as you find something that makes you happy, that is the main thing, my A,3s are fine and will move to Michelin Road 5 trail at end of season when the A3,s are dead, but with 3000 kms on the bike they still look like new.

I’ve got them on ... 2000 miles done on them, and can’t wait to get them off.... yes they look stunning and really suit my GSA .... but that’s the only benefit I can find... I’ve ridden on most tyres and never had my traction light on as much as with these tyres.
I rode through France few weeks ago through a lot of bad rain... and they actually felt dangerous.

I fitted them to My Gsa lc , last month and did a 3500 miles round trip from Scotland. Very good wearing and handling. Felt very stable in torrential rain on the Autobahn. I did a fair bit of motorway ,couple days in the Black forest and a week round Czeck Republic......However , they are Very Noisy at speed (Did lessen a bit as they wore down !)and over 80mph a slight (controllable weave) .. I was fully loaded however!

I hate Anakee 3's and wouldn't have them if they were free, I quite fancied the Pirelli ST3 as my next tyre but the noise comment may have killed that idea for me..........

Interesting, I think I may stick with the Conti TA2 again next time I'm due new tyres.

I've used Conti TA2s on my 21/18 wheel bikes for years.
But I've just fitted Pirelli STRs to my ATAS,having ditched the OE Dunlops asap.
I've only ridden in the dry but having just done 700 miles around Brittany two up on them I have to say they are the best tyres I've yet experienced on such a bike.
Very very stable, seems to corner on rails and also very stable at speed. No idea about wear rate yet but I'll be replacing them with the same again regardless.
And didn't notice any noise issues at all.

Well I’m surprised at some of the positive comments about these tyres and making me think I’ve got a bad pair... what tyre pressures are the LC GSA bikes running ?

Had the STR on my GS LC for 7k km
Great tyre!
On the road it outperform the Michelin panicky 3 in every aspects except the vibe and noise.
The STR loves to corner ;)
Off the road they perform way better than panicky 3.
Mostly my next tyre will be another pair of STR
GOOD JOB Pirelli!
