Hi All,
Just thought I'd drop my 2 pence worth in on these tyres.
I've got a LC GS Adventure and as a point of reference (as everyone has different opinions) I happen to think the Michelin Anakee is a pretty decent tyre. In-fact having tried the Pilot Road Trail (when I didn't want any off-road capabilities), the Conti XC70 (on a long trip of mixed dry riding), the Avon Trailrider (on mixed surfaces), after all of those I keep coming back to the Michelin Anakee, it just seems to work well on the GSA.
So why did I try the Rally STR's......well to be honest, I just liked the idea of them! I had some Angel ST's on a GSXR750 about 8 years ago and they should not of been as good as they were, being a touring tyre on a sports bike, I was easily able to get knee down and they were way better than my brain......so, as I hadn't tried any Pirelli tyres on the GSA I thought I'd give them ago.
Well with just over 2000 miles on the STR's I have to say I am VERY impressed.
Grip - They are exceptionally stable, and I had them put on during the 'Beast from the East', so can happily say they can handle any weather that is thrown at them! They are exceptionally confidence inspiring, perhaps too much so!!! The type of tyre that could see your ego overriding your talent! I have not used them off-road in any deep wet mud, but in gravel, loose damp dirt and grass they are happy as larry! I do not pretend to have ANY skills in the offroad department, but all the green lanes and BOAT's I've been down have been handled easily, far more confidence inspiring than the XC70's. On road they go anywhere I point them. I would class my riding as enthusiastic, and they aid that with feedback and stickiness.....I haven't yet wanted more tyre at any point.
Noise - yes they make noise, in fact its a high pitch whine at Continental Toll Road Speeds. It starts close to 70Mph. I wear custom earplugs but can easily say these are the loudest tyres I have tried so far, but the whine has reduced as they've worn in a bit.....it doesn't bother me, but some may hate it!
Longevity - I have just over 2k miles on them and the rear is yet to square off. On daily commuting I do 70miles 50% on motorway 50% on A/B roads. Off-road I do at weekends and as stated previously I am not a talented off-roader, so I need all the help I can get. The Rear tyre is just starting to show signs it could start to square, but as mentioned above, nothing yet. The front pretty much looks as good as new. So for longevity so far so good. I run them at the standard BMW advised pressures 2.5 & 2.9.
So, currently the STR's have overtaken the Anakee's as my preference tyre. Although only early days in this sets lifecycle, I can already see myself ordering more when they do wear out.
If you haven't tried the STR's I'd definitely put them on your short list if you want that 'go anywhere' tyre!
Enjoy and ride safe folks!
