Piston Broke

Dealer finally phoned this evening. So far they have established that one cylinder only has 4 bar of compression :tears
They will will now remove the engine to get the head off.
Maybe my initial though that the cam chain had "jumped" is not that far off.
Watch this space.

@Redboots
Hi John,
Any news yet???
None. May is full of holidays here, this past Wednesday for VE day, today for some religious thing and I think they are closed tomorrow and Saturday because they are open, exceptionally, on Monday, no doubt to catch those returning south from the Le Mans GP.
They did say the devis would be ready in 2 weeks (last Sat).

I'm waiting............................

Just out of curiosity, anyone know if you can put a duke motor in the Adventure?
Or even an 890?

There seems to be some about from crashed bikes.

The saga will have a little while to run yet :blast
I was at the dealer today and the motor is still in the bike :blast:blast
They said the estimate will now be done by the end of the month :blast:blast:blast

On the plus side (), they said the cam chain was in the correct place, so they must have had the valve cover off.
No compression on one cylinder must mean it has dropped/snapped a valve, no?
The results of that can be knackered head/piston/bore and who knows what else.

I told them I can get a 2023 790 engine for €2200 (Plus P&P) and their reply was that that could be cheaper.
They also said they have contacts for wrecked bikes and will enquire about a "new" engine and let me know in the next day or three.
They commented it had the wrong oil in it. Nope said I, 10-w60, Motul not Motorex. He said its 10w50 in there. It isn't, but how would they know/think that? Just because its not Motorex?

Onwards

You can analyse oil for viscositys & chemical analysis, however its normally outside of the abilities of your average dealership
Warranty claim anywhete?

The yanks are obsessed with il analysis, IIRC Moterex goes out of spec faster than any other oil, if they put 10w60 in at a service its probably down the 8w50 by the time you ride home, and 2w10 by the 9,000 miles they claim it will last.

Unless they sent it to a laboratory and knew how many miles it had done prior to blow up there is no way they could tell the grade, and if it had lab analysis it would of probably given and idea of what had gone wrong from the particulates discovered in the metal.

Tell them to pull their finger out too, we are all getting bored of waiting for the results, it's not just you this affects, go and tell them!

Email from the dealer: Unable to find a motor.

I found an engine. Yea. March 2023 with 6k kms on it. €2200 and €150 transport.
Called the dealer. He replied with "wont fit" WTF! "You need a 2019 or 2020". Fucketyfuckfuck.
Email to KTM Austria to ask if that is the case and if so, why so!

I can even find 790 motors of the "right" vintage in the UK, but getting it here, Brexit, init!
I have found one that uses Ebay Global Shipping, but the option is not available. Email sent.

Waiting..............................

Yes, maybe dropped a valve.

Could also be a ring issue though, or holed piston, all will show low/zero compression. You need to get the head off. You may be lucky, it might not be as serious as you fear.

Buy one in the UK -

ask a friendly tosser going to Sids to bung it in the boot ;)

Ok your going to have to wait ... but its an option

He, or Ebay wont do Global Shipping on engines:(
I had another email from the dealer in a slightly different tone saying that KTM say there are internal differences on the engine years and the ECU might get upset (!)
Unfortunately I sent my email to the pedal cycle branch :D
Re-sent it to KTM proper and they replied with a case number, saying they would gather all the info, investigate and get back to me.
