I've just had all the bearings replaced and now I have to refit the bevel box. We've got the manual and know what to do, but what snags are we likely to come up against?

The first one I can see is that my torque wrench only goes to 80ft-lbs and I need to go to 118ft-lbs, can anyone local lend me one for the weekend?

Secondly, how does one hold the pivot pin and tighten the locknut at the same time???

Any advice (and / or help) would be most welcome :thumb2

(Must get done soon - missing nice weather riding!!! and it needs testing before going to the Isle of Man)

It's fine thread and pivot pin shouldn't turn (in my experience:augie ). Put a mark on it to check there's been no movement.

Get a small dremel type wire brush and clean the threads of old loctite so the correct torque can obtained, use a small amount of loctite as BMW seem to smother it in it at the factory but there is no need. As said mark it once you've tightened it up and don't forget to preload the bike before tightening the tie arm.

Clean the threads as clean as possible.Use solvent/suede brush/run the pin through the nut so its free.
Makes setting the 5/6 ft/lb preload that much easier.
Mark the pin with white paint or something similar so you can see if it has moved having tightened the locknut.
It shouldn't move if you have cleaned the threads properly.
Steptoe has (on other threads) recommended no loctite on the pin/locknut.
I didn't use any either but you may want to check for yourself.
Check on that 118 ft/lb figure. That maybe is in NM.Its 77ft/lb for the locknut.
Good luck,Col.

just seen this.

i have one you can borrow. i also have one that will do the lower figure :)

You might want to check/tighten the bearing after 500 miles or so, especially with the chair increasing forces, so not using loctite will make this easier.

Swivel bearings.

I always use locktight, cleqan up the threadsas above put in the pin to correct (low) tourque figure and leave it over night. Mark a line across the pin onto the casting and then put on the lock nut the correct tourque is 118ft pounds. Check the pebcil mark and you will see if it has moved, if it has start again. Moto Bins sell a tool for this but my method has always worked first time and costs nothing. I only leave it over night to be sure that locktight has gone off. Try a hire shop for a tourque wrench you can borrow mine with pleasuree but we are at least a hundred miles apart!.
Good luck with it but do make sure the threads are clean on pi n and lock nut before starting, mant including our mr s. do not bther with locktite i do cos i know with my luck disaster will occur!.
dave ( locktite ) GS.

It says 160Nm (118 ft/lb)

I got my torque figure from here.It says it applies to all oilheads but checking the 1150 manual,it does give a figure of 160NM.

Have checked and retightened my locknuts to the correct figure.:thumb
Found one pivot bearing as rough as a dogs ar5e.:(
When you tighten the control arm at the bevel box you need a load of about 85Kg on the seat.Someone sitting on the bike is good.

Yours,no longer with loose nuts,col.
