Places of interest in north east italy

I am going back to Itlaly soon but this time with mrs www.

We are going to be touring around the area in north east Italy, sort of a triangle between saltzburg, Venice and tirano.

Anyhoo, I am looking for interesting places to visit in that neck of the woods, anyone got any ideas please? All I have come up with so far is the ice caves south of saltzburg and the ski jump at Innsbruck. The eagles nest is out because she knows I have been there before and she ain't interested.

We have been here just over two years and are still finding new places and roads for our guests to enjoy. We are 90mins south from Salzburg and two hours from the Adriatic coast. Stay with us for two days or more and you get a National Park card. This gives free use of some of the best roads anywhere as well as los of off bike things to keep your wife happy! Most people find they save almost enough to cover their bar bill here.

Some great roads around Malta

This is the view down the valley back towards John and Ros's place .. an interesting bit of twisty single track up to a dam... The national park card covers you for the tunnel tolls... found that out afterwards

Nockalmstrasse... as good as the Stelvio in my opinion, and better tarmac If you look on the left edge you can just see another bit of the brilliantly smooth tarmac

We have just returned to Australia after 3 months travelling around Europe on our GS and stayed a few days with John and Ros at Hochlamspitze in Austria. It was a highlight of our trip - supurb roads, excellent advice, good company and wonderful hospitality. You won't be disappointed.
If you want to travel a bit further West of Tirano then drop into the Tourist Office at Lecco and pick up a copy of their excellent riding guide for the Lecco/Como areas.

I'm not that familiar with that part of Italy, preferring to be a little further west at Lake Garda. I know the part of austria between Salzberg & Innsbruck quite well, though. My suggestions:
Krimml waterfalls plus ride the Gerlos pass. The falls are worth a morning so you can walk up to the higher levels.
Achensee - one of the prettiest Alpine lakes with crystal clear water. Good for water sports.
Otzi the Iceman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ötzi_the_Iceman - I like this sort of thing but not everyone's cup of tea
Glass making in Rattenberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattenberg
Hintertux Glacier - all year skiing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hintertux - go up on the cable cars for excellent views on a clear day
Wildchonau - pretty valley SW of Salzburg - ideal for a bit of hill walking or paragliding. Cable cars take you to the top of the hills.

By turning right at Salzburg and heading towards Innsbruck you miss our area totally. Sadly our tourist authorities have no idea about marketing the area. How many of you have heard of Carinthia exept in my rantings? So what happens is everyone heads towards the Tirol, because they have heard of it. Take the B159 south from Salzburg and then the B99 and discover some of the best biking roads anywhere. There are more than enough fantastic roads and interesting places here to keep you occupied for weeks! Here in our valley there are more waterfalls than you can shake a stick at. Our local lakes are warm (thermal springs) and the mountain views stunning. Both Italy and Slovenia are on our doorstep so the possibilites are endless.

Well, John, there is a very good reason people head for the Tirol: it is a fabulous area to visit.

However, I can confirm the B99 is a fantastic road. I took it when travelling from the Tirol to Slovenia. It amused me the way the road passed under the incredible motorway, sometimes hundreds of feet above your head on stilts.

If you go to the falls, at the top carpark- last on right if coming from Krimml, or 1st on left if coming down from the pass- on the right as you go into the carpark is a parking place for bikes, plus "bikersafes", lockers for your gear. Make sure that you have a euro with you, you get it back when you go.

The falls are well worth a visit, but to tell you the truth, the view of the falls from the bottom area is about the best. We walked up to the first resturant, good view, iced coffee, and then walked back down. 2.5km each way with a 300mtr rise, don't do it in your bike gear

We are going to be trying to play everything by ear so our itinerary and route are both liquid, heaven knows where we will get to.

I can keep the above places with me now though so that we can plan our days on the hoof.

I was not knocking the Tirol, you are right, it's a fantastic area. Just pointing out that so is Carinthia. We know from talking to literally thousands of bikers at the NEC show that most people have never heard of Carinthia. The difference is not that one are is better than the other just that the Tirol is well publicised and Carinthia isn't. People mostly go to places they have heard of. Just trying to wave the flag for Carinthia.
