Plastic panniers

Whilst at the bike show I was quite impressed with the Hepco & Becker panniers and top box fitted to one of the KTM Adventure s's on display.
They are made of a double skin moulded plastic similar to the stuff that some tool carrying cases are made of. Much much lighter than ally cases and appear to have insulating properties similar to a cooler box. On the down side they didn't appear to be that big but there was still room enough for a couple of days worth of gear in them.
Quite impressed by the bike as well.

I believe the double skin is to carrry water between for those Dakar moments!

I saw those panniers, and they were almost as wide as a car. Well over a metre.

Didn't like them myself, but horses of courses, or whatever that saying is?

The build quality looked appalling IMHO, Airfix kits looked better produced. However I'm sure they're the ones that Micky used in the long way home (or something like that) and he was impressed with their ability to absorb knocks and bashes.

Pelicans..

If you want tough plastic.. then Pelicans are the way to go..

We use these for field gear... put it this way.. had a JCB run one over and it survived. Seen a few mounted to bikes on standard racks.

Saw the KTM ones at the show.. and the mounting latches didnt look too strong, otherwise fine cases. Road use only, probably very good..

I'm pretty sure that they are the one's the old man used on his Mongolia trip. They are pretty tough and took the weight of Sue's 650 (stood the bike on them when lifting it into the back of a lorry). He also knocked one of the panniers off when leaving the Bikerloft hotel in Belgium However there was no damage done (except to his pride ) and the pannier went straight back on without any problems

top quality bit of kit, so impressed was i that i've gone and bought a pelican case to use as a toolbox, lets see the baggage handlers break that

KTM have those panniers branded with their logo by H and B, but for the non KNM owner thye are the Gobi range and you can add optional taps to enable water carrying in the double skin.

They're tough. Ok they're wide, but you don't buy 'em to commute in London, you buy 'em to travel

No problems, and as Laughing Gas says, you can stand a bike on them. My pal in Germany crashed at 80mph (1200GS) and they still fitted, still sealed, still worked.... no probs.
