Have had the bearings done in the shaft drive(The ones before the gaitor) of my 2000 1150. But still there is a slight amount of play evident when rocking the wheel from top to bottom. Have been told that a small amount of play is the norm. Is it?. Didnt think that it should have any play at all. Any suggestions of what to do next?

What you have to check is that the play is in the rear wheel / bearing OR the rear pivot bearings

It's a biot of an experience thing but if you rock the back wheel is the wheel moving relative to the final drive (in this case you porbably need the fianl drive shimmed) OR is the "wheel/final drive assembly" moving relative to the driveshaft tunnel? In that case it's probably pivot bearings

Hard to spot but thats the difference and how I would do it

HAve fun :aidan :aidan :aidan

I wouldn’t worry; I found a slight margin of movement on my rear wheel. (1150) the next time I was at my dealers, I asked them to check it, all three of the service guys said it was the norm, adding it should have some play....

Erm.... my dealer said the same.

Had bearing replaced after being advised of excessive play, then a week later I checked and to me the play seemed identical to the previous play. Took the bike back but this time the play was "ok".

Who knows, bike sounds and feels fine and the play is minor so ill worry about it some other time. :augie

Hhhhhmmmmmmmmm Pinch of salt gentlemen??Why would BMW make shims if free play were acceptable?? Imagine you have a ring of little shiny balls all chasing each other around a track (i.e. a Ball bearing inner and outer casing) Now if said balls follow in a true track then the "Wear" created is much much less than if the balls had enough free play to wander onto the "banking" scuff a bit of their shine off and then return to the track to perhaps drift out onto the other side? etc etc etc

Do you get my picture?

What absolute crap.

Plus one on what he says !!! :aidan:aidan:aidan
