How much laterial play should you have in the rear wheel?
I have just been out and I was aware as what can only be described as rear wheel wobble?

I have certainly never noticed it before?

Grabbing the wheel on either side of the tyre there is about a 1 or 2 mm of play/movement in it. Having never checked it when it was new I don't know how much there should be.

The bike has only done 4500 miles so it is due for a service soon, maybe the bearings need tightening up a whisker?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Probably the rear pivot taper roller bearings have taken a dive. My 1100 went at 5k, my Adventures were done at 4.3k and my mates 1100s went at 9k, so your 4.5k would sound about right. Funnily enough they seem to last an age if you put new bearings in. The dealers usually just tighten them but the chances are that outer race is damaged and replacement is the only option...costs about £32 for the bearings (a pair). Bearings are made by FAG but are made to BMW design so are only available through the dealers. It takes just over an hour to swap the pair if you have the right kit.

Just had 6K service and one of the items I needed attended to was "slight play in rear wheel ". Solution rear wheel drive taper roller bearing replaced under warranty. Bearing in drive shaft also adjusted I believe. This is on a R1150 GSA.

rear play

Had the very same problem but also, very loud creaking from inside the rear gaitor. Had the above mentioned bearings replaced, now fine. Approx 15k on clock. Cost £100.

Yup, ditto the above. Rear pivot taper-rollers goosed at 25k-ish. Cheap job at Euroclassics, Northampton if you're anywhere near.

Took it in to the dealer this morning to have it checked out. The result being that it is now booked in for next weekend to have it all stripped out and checked/tightened up.
