Hi All.

My name is Ronan from Cork in the South of Ireland. I am new to all of this so please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section or if a similar post question has been posted before, I have just purchased my R1200GS on Saturday and had never even ridden one before I drove it home from Dublin to Cork on Sat. I must say that I'm extremely satisfied with it.
There is one problem with it! just as I was viewing it on Saturday and trying to start it the Dash lit up with EWS! and the previous owner couldn't believe his eyes, we tapped the Ring Antenna a few times and got it to work, and he went to the local BMW garage and got a new one but was advised that it had to be programmed and there was no one in service to do this on a saturday! so can anyone advise me of where I can get this programmed in Cork as I was told that the Main Dealers charge a fortune for this.
Thanking You, and looking forward to meeting you at some stage, so all help and advice greatly appreciated!

Welcome Ronan,

There are quite a few tossers in Cork and i am reliably informed that "grumpy one", may have the tool to do this. You can pm other members as you are not a subcribed member

Visit the Irish section further down the page and put a post up there, someone will be along to sort you.

EWS ring

No, it does not have to be programmed.

But it is difficult to change at the side of the road, because the 2 security bolts holding in the steering lock/ignition switch/ews ring have to be drilled out.

It is possible, however, to unplug the lead out of it at the side of the raod, and plug it into another new EWS ring. This will get you running, and so enable you to drive to a garage. (easier with the spare key to activate)

Since the bike is unstealable anyway unless one has a key, I took of the steering yoke 2 years ago, drilled out the security bolts & replaced with stainless steel allen screws.

I carry both an EWS ring and a fuel punp controller with me on long trips. so if bike stops with either fault, I know I can get it running again in under 30 mins.

Thank you all for your valued support! it is greatly appreciated!:beerjug:
Hopefully that will be the end o the troubles!!

Regards.

Did you collect the bike knowing there was an issue with it then?

Just as I was going to test drive it the EWS came up on the screen and the previous owner went to the local BMW Dealer to purchase a new Ring Antenna, and gave me a reduction in price to get it sorted in Cork!

Cheers!
