Please respond if you're NOT GOING TO HAVE A 1200GS FPS FAILURE

Tim.
There's a huge difference between informing someone about the problem and grabbing them by the collar and screaming in their faces "You all gonna DIE !!!!!!!!!!!!! You all gonna DIE DIE DIE DIE !!!!!!!!!!". And that's exactly what you're doing. Doesn't improve the confidence of biking folk, does it?
No bike is 100% safe. Nothing in this world is safe. I had four VFRs and one of them nearly killed me. If you don't die because of the pump, you die because of the dumb blonde, or diesel spill......You die anyway. Shouting about it won't help. If you can do something about it - great. Do. Fix it. Tell everybody how to fix it. But don't (it's only a suggestion) spread paranoia - somebody might get scared, sell the bike and move to Tunda. As I nearly did after reading your posts. And I only came here to get some info...........

Loved the bit about the vaseline and condom though. Deep !!!!!
Send it to the BMW guys.

I know its well documneted, but can someone point me at the SIMPLEST EXPLANANTION of a fix/work around that a numpty like me can have to hand just in case....thanks

No vaseline and condoms required on my 1100, we don't have that sort of relationship.....

No problems

I never had any problem in four years; now I am wondering if the fact that there was always a tank bag on the bike was a contributory factor? On my 2008 bike I have fitted a Bagster tank cover + bag which all fits very well and looks right on the bike; the bag is quickly detachable and is also a rucksack.

I don't know what FPS is either and in any case, I agree with the sentiment of just feckin riding it until it breaks, then fix it with out moaning.

In older cars/bikes there's a regulator which returns excess juice back to the tank. FPC supplies correct voltage (depending on the RPM) to the pump, so, there's no return line/excess fuel. Supposed to be more efficient. And the engine starts quicker because the juice is already there before it starts turning. That's my limited understanding of how it works.
Some genius at BMW put this controller in a bottom of the cup on the left side of the bike and positioned it in such a way that after every wash/rain there's at least half a glass of water and controller is partially submerged. The defective seal - water getting in - shorting the pump. What's inside:nenau ......probably a rectifier. Don't know. It's all sealed anyway.
You can see it clearly - black round cover with holes in it. Take out the left fairing, take out the cover, you'll see a little thingy with cooling fins and some wires sticking out of it. Disconnect the wires, take out two screws, take the whole thing out, clean it, spray with WD40, ACF, or silicone spray, put some bathroom sealant around the edges, stick it back, spray some more just to feel good. Done. Don't tape over the vents as some of the guys recommend - the cooling fins are there to prevent overheating, and to restrict the air access probably is not a good idea. It might still die of course - every electric apparatus does and from different reasons, but that's going to be an accident. No way anyone can guarantee that it won't happen. If your bike is 4-5 years old, or if you see any signs of corrosion on the wires/cooling fins - better to buy a new controller - less chances for it to die from whatever they usually die.
And don't use any vaselin and condoms as Tim suggests.....

cheers, I'll have a look when I fit my engine bars Sat

Ha - I've spotted the flaw in your logic (or is it a deliberate mistake and you're just testing us). If you have a problem that needs fixing and you look to UKGSER to help provide the fix, then if no-one has been moaning, screaming, crusading or even just asking for a fix, how is anyone gonna post an answer to provide the fix. And based on this if you aren't gonna get a fix from UKGSER cos no-one has posted about a problem then you aint never gonna reach the ripe old age of 70 riding a GS (most likely) cos they all seem to go wrong somewhere down the line.

:bounce1

We all know there’s a problem, we all know how to fix it, so, why don’t we all just do that?
Crusade is an honourable thing, but utterly pointless……… You want an official letter of apology and some flowers from BMW ? Not going to happen. You want to ride’n be happy? Just fix the bloody thing. Take it out, clean it, use some ACF, bit of bathroom sealant, stick it back, ride, enjoy. I’m not here to criticise anyone, but hey, I was 16 two days ago, I’m 44 today and I’ll be 70 tomorrow. Then I’d be able to spend countless hours on the net, crusading, rallying, sending letters, petitions and making everybody paranoid.
Now, I’d rather spend all this time riding. And if there’s a problem (and by the way – ALL bikes have problems), I’ll go to UKGSER, look for the solution and fix it.
So.
I’m NOT GOING TO HAVE A 1200GS FPS FAILURE.
Anyone else?

(Pukmeister - you got me)

Nope....no flaw. Asking for help is fine, discussing the problem is fine, researching, getting info, giving advice, getting advice.. it's all cool. What's not cool is hammering the point into someones head. You made your point - thank you. Then let people decide if they're going to do anything about it. And don't try to scare anyone. "You'll all DIE DIE DIE !!!"
And anyway, forum is good for information, not for the solutions. That was my mistake, you're right, I didn't mean "needs fixing..".
I meant general info, opinions, experience.
For the solutions you need professionals, not DIY heroes.
I went to the BMW mechanics. Who know about the problem better then people who deal with those issues every day? One of those guys was riding 1200. Even better. Problem solved. Or you can start organising rallies, gather statistics, send letters and turn into the crusader. Nothing wrong with that - as Frank Zappa said " Everybody can have a little fun......as long as you don't hurt nobody."
Folks down my street are crusaders. Vegeterians. Happy cow and such. I'd no problem with their ideas. As long as they don't start forcing me to eat my own fingernails instead of chops.. One day leaflet came. Then another. Then I was stopped on the street and given a speech about how horrible it is to eat the meat and wear the boots made from the murdered being.
See the difference? That was one step over the line. But the shining knight saw the signs and the prospect of the mentioned boot in his arse. Now we live in peace and still share the same world. He doesn't patronise me and I don't stick objects up his anus. Isn't that what our grandfather Lenin wanted? The true utopia. He told me all about the horrors of my ways, about the danger to my health and sanity, good. It's his holy right. As long as he doesn't scream at me and doesn't force me to sign pro-cows petitions, his health and sanity is in no danger.
And of course, as most of the crusades, this one is absolutely pointless.
Someone tell me please. What good can come out of it ????

Well, friend. I'll make it easy for you.. ready ?
It's the FUEL......PUMP........TADA !!
Geddit ? No ? OK, I admit it. That was a mistake. My mistake. I meant FPC.
Us dumb Rysskies never learnt to write proper. I'm sorry. In writing.
Happy ?

Feck - now I know what one is it will go and fail on me:blast

I prolly wont.

I noticed (and having read the flurry of posts on the subject) that water collects in the top of the Fuel controller, usually from rain, i think it gets in via the top. I also noticed that there are vents in the top of the plastic cover so assumed that air should pass over it prolly for cooling. I guess the problem is that water is getting into the control realy and electricity and water usually doesnt mix. My solution was to keep water out but allow air to pass through, this I did with a cut up plastic coke bottle which I taped over the top of the cover, keeping water out but allowing air passing over. No problems yet.

:beerjug:

Just have to suss out the ring antenna now.

:augie

BTW the 1200GS is the best bike i have had so far, in my opinion better than a lot of people say.

Just fix the bloody thing. Take it out, clean it, use some ACF, bit of bathroom sealant, stick it back,

You may find all you have done is clean it. Its solid state electronics set in epoxy. If this circuit fails you can use all the ACF and bathroom sealant you want, you wont get it working.

In September Greater Manchester Police had 20 new bikes delivered 1200RT's and 800st's within a week 12 of these bikes where off the road due to "FPC failure".

I was talking to a guy who works for Philips Electronics and he had just been out to China for 9 months trying to improve "clean rooms and quality procedures". His parting comment was " China will get there eventually but it will take some time".

It might be me, but your post sounds a bit angry

Feck - now I know what one is it will go and fail on me:blast
Just repeat......."It will not fail...it will not fail....it will not fail"
Well, if it does - you probably end up dead. Isn't that a best way to go?

If ?? There are so many "ifs" in this world, starting with "what if this bloke forgets to indicate ?", "what if there's a nail sticking out around the corner?"
I cannot live my life according to "ifs".
I choose to believe the BMW mechanic who told me that in 95% the reason for the unit saying "Oops" is the inferior quality seal. The dealers replaced as many units and seals as possible, it's all well documented. Overall quality is something else. So far, I find 1200 more reliable then average VFR, the build quality is better, the bike has heaps more character and I don't remember the last time when I had such a good time on the bike. I love it. I did what I can to make it as safe as possible and now I'm enjoying it to the full.
It might be me, but your post sounds a bit angry.
Yep. The last thing I need now is somebody trying to put some fear into me head and taking all the joy out of me soul. Amen !
(what's more, I had a bad crash not long ago, destroyed the bike, and the first few days on the new bike were HELL. I was scared of my own shadow. Add to this
a pit of paranoia about the bike which is going to die at any moment.....The recipe for disaster)

I will NOT suffer at the hands of FPC failure, due to the fact that I sold my 1200 last week........:D
