Just come back after a run out on my new toy and I think I have a clutch problem:(. I was giving it a bit of stick in top gear when the clutch seemed to give out completely at about 6k and it just reved round to 8 ish. I thought shit and tried running it up through the gears giving it rice all the way and no problem in top that time. Up hill in 3,4 and 5 th no problem I could not get top run out of road:D. I have not noticed anything untoward otherwise only when I really give it full throttle in top. Is there some sort of traction control on these beasts? The roads are really cold and I thought there might be a chance that the back wheel is starting to spin in top (wishfull thinking) or is it that top is finding the clutch out?? Really a bit worried just bought the thing and no warranty, its a 2005. Its really wierd its like the clutch just breaks completely just when it really is starting to pull hard in top about 150kph.

make 100% sure the clutch lever is not fouling the hand guard

make sure the clutch fluid reservior is not overfilled

make sure youve got lots of torx sockets when you split the bike to replace the clutch:D

Don't think I will be doing that job. I will take it back to the shop and see if I can reason with the sales man. He actually sold it for a client so its really a private sale:(. But a BMW dealer should not have shonky goods in their shop he told me the bike was perfect. I could not test it because I did not have insurance... but to be honest I would never have rode it the way I did to get the result on a test ride to be honest I don't think anybody would! How much to fit a new clutch any how?

have you checked the lever its very common problem?

bmw dealer clutch replacement?about £750 i think

Mine sometimes slips in top or 5th if I abuse the throttle. It doesn't always do it so I'm not going to worry about it (I actually thought it was cured but it did it again last time I went for a spirited ride).

Are you sure it's not slipping out of gear ?

More likely you just didn't get it into gear properly. I've had an occasional false neutral between 4th and 5th when I haven't used my foot firmly enough.

Defo in gear I have been riding sport bikes for years when you miss a gear you just about go over top with the deceleration. No this is a roll on from about 3k ish in top and then banging it to the stop just let’s go at about 6k. Only seems to happen in high gears so defo clutch (always shows up a weak clutch) Things is its good in the lower gears going through so just on the way out. Guy at the shop probably thought he was selling it to someone who might not push the boundaries early on and not notice it. I have a gentle word in his shell like.

Ce n'est pas si bien. Pour changer l'embrayage, il serais un peut cher, monsieur......:(

Not definitely the clutch itself though ;)

As said above, first and free/easy to do thing is go look at the handguard/clutch lever......It only takes a slight knock to twist the handguard down a tad so that the lever is touching it and is a little bit in.....If that's the case, top gear max torque accelerating hard is exactly where it will cause the clutch to slip.

Don't beat yourself up with angst about it and ranting about the dealer before you've checked :thumb2

hmmm. Who did you pay ? If it was the dealer, then it wasn't a private sale.

Être un Scotman je vais remplacer l'embrayage uniquement lorsque le **** sera pas tirer ou passer à la vitesse:D

seriously though it appears that others have had something similar that has actually righted its self with use. I was giving it rice today and, as has been suggested else where on the forum, maybe the guy before was a bit more sedate and the clutch plate is glazed . I have not checked for too much fluid or contact with the hand protectors so some things to check first:confused:

Great bike to ride though suspension is good on the corners for a big lump and the brakes!!! And I have just stepped off a fireblade. I will have to get used to the lumpy motor at low revs in middle gears thou thats where you miss the four pot:D

The GS approach to riding is very different, but just as fun in its own way :thumb2

IN fact, being able to cover the ground ON AVERAGE as fast as most sports bikes, not giving a toss about the surface or conditions, the sheer comfort and the fact that you can see a gnarly track and just go off down it without any worries make it a better bike in many ways :augie

PS I had a clutch that did what you describe on my 1150......after a day, it sorted itself and was almost certainly just a glaze or a drop of oil after it had been stood for a while :thumb

Enjoy it:beerjug:

Yes Defo going to take a chill on this one and give it a week or two. The bike has been static for a while I suspect because the guy in the shop told me the gut who owned it only did 2k km last year and it was serviced just before it went into the shop for sale. I did check the clutch fluid and it was very full but the hand book says it does not require any maintainance, I removed about 3 ml. Sadly the handbook also says the level will rise as the clutch wears so maybe it is shagged.. I'll give it a few weeks to see if it improves nowt to lose.

i have also had this on my 09 GSA. but its only happened about 3 times during the 20k miles i've put on her.

It happened again the other week, when i was accelerating hard in top. But it was fine the next time i rode it.

Strange...

Might I suggest...popping in to the dealer when you're passing (assuming that's feasible - if not call) and make them aware that there is an issue but that you're going to 'live with it' for a while to see if it solves itself. That way they are in the picture and if the thing doesn't right itself they know it's been an issue from Day 1 and that they sold the bike with the fault - might make any later discussions less 'challenging'. :beerjug:
