Where would you insert these sky hooks? What yer really need Simon are 2 or 3 Skyhooks

Anna had my phone, so no pictures even... it was just a slow lowering really, not a slapstick moment at all. Please tell me you videotaped it?
Yep, which is why I said I think I got the angles wrong and they were angled in too much. Not having seen the system in the flesh I am still adjusting / guessing.Tubing will take a big load, in compression or tension, but if there's a bending force it'll fold.
It's why I initially thought it would be an A frame, with one Guy/tie, two in compression, to share the load and, I think, better stability.Yep, which is why I said I think I got the angles wrong and they were angled in too much. Have a look at the you toob videos I linked earlier. They show the system in action, I can't see what I am doing wrong to not be able to replicate it.It's why I initially thought it would be an A frame, with one Guy/tie, two in compression, to share the load and, I think, better stability.
I don't doubt one will work, it's just two's better.Have a look at the you toob videos I linked earlier. They show the system in action, I can't see what I am doing wrong to not be able to replicate it.
Mmm, I’d be careful about that.Got it! Looking at dozens of setups, I have noticed the hammock is hung lower down the pole than I did. I tried it with the hammock hanging from the TOP of th epole - all these others, except the broom handle version, which was only about 3'6" long the hammock is hung from about 2/3rds up and the guy lines are also supporting from the same place as the hammock hang. It is only the ridge line for the fly sheet (tarp) that goes from the top.
I shall try again tomorrow and see how I get on.
Do please set up the camera…
So what angle do the poles need to be at in order to get them only in compression? This is the bit I am struggling with that all other uses have no problem with.Mmm, I’d be careful about that.
If the hammock is slung from the top, same as the guys, there is no bending moment on the poles, they are only loaded in compression.
If you hold the ends (ground, guy ropes), and pull in the middle (you’re the catenary), you’ll bend the poles. Even if the bending doesn’t kink them, it makes the Euler collapse calculations invalid, and so you’re flying blind…
Key assumption of the Euler calcs is that the poles are straight and the ends “pin jointed”, ie the poles are only loaded in pure compression.
Do please set up the camera…
I'm Alastair which is similar if that helpsWho’s Alistair?I’m Antony!
None taken.

If the hammock and the guys are fixed at the same point on the pole, any point, the pole is in compression. So what angle do the poles need to be at in order to get them only in compression? This is the bit I am struggling with that all other uses have no problem with.
Newton, he used to use a hammock until the day an apple tree fell over and he landed on the ground. He stuck to gravity after that.![]()
It has been interesting to ‘watch’ Simon’s experiments. At least he is having a go
It got me wondering as to when the first man conceived of a hammock, and when a man first dreamed up the notion of suspending the hammock when there are no trees? The maths of the physics behind it are quite complicated, I guess. I wonder who, in the distant past, quantified them? Newton? Archimedes?
The guy lines for the tripod on the single pole system. It has been around for a decade or so and working happily in the USA. I could buy a Tensa Solo system, which is what I am trying to reproduce, but to buy ONE pole and anchors works out at £400 landed in the UK.... I need 2 poles! Hence me trying to make the system over here from what we have available. The best solution I can think of is a tripod at each end. With guys attached it would be stable and strong and if the legs are adjustable then almost any ground would be okay
Edit to add after a very brief search they do exist
