Drove home Sunday the first time I have used my GS wc in the dark and rain and was surprised how poor the lights are!! any comments?

My WC GSA has the best headlamp of any bike I've owned, it does have the LED headlamp, does yours?
They are set too low at the factory. Just adjust them up a bit. I found the same on my first LC, and was surprised as the LED was meant to be a big step forward, then once adjusted properly, they are the best headlights I've ever had.
Are you sure they were on ! I think there brill, 4am start in Germany and they light the rd up like its daytime.

Should have gone to Specsavers 
I thought the cut off was poor as well until I adjusted the unit up. Turn the wheel built into the up/down flip thingy.

It takes a few minutes to adjust them, I've had to do it on one from rainbow bmw and one from pidcock bmw so they clearly don't raise them whilst in the workshops. Once you sort it you will be pretty amazed at how good the throw is.
I have the LED headlight and whilst adjusting the throw has made it much better it still isn't as good as the twin H7 on dipped beam on my old RT plus another H7 on main beam. It is much better than the old hex head GS but it's nothing special and IMHO a bit dissappointing. I notice the new RT now only has one light on dip, possibly due to some EU regulation (or am I beginning to sound like a U-kipper)!
Exactly my experience as well, with both the GS and GSA.
More likely due to BMW trying to save a pound on every bike. One dip and one head beam just isn't enough on standard halogens and whilst the LED's should be far better two would take it up to the standard of car lights that we are all surrounded by and which cause us problems when they are close behind on a dark wet night, meaning you are trying to ride in your own shadow.
Maybe a bit of "maintaining the (crap) corporate style as well"
To which you could add being blinded (either directly or via the mirrors) by the blazing sun of some numpty on his light festooned but badly adjusted GS, adventuring his way towards chilling, kicking-back and biker bantering with like minded souls, maintaining the (crap) 'must have' style he's been told he must adopt.

If I may ask, is there an easy and recommended way to adjust the lights from all the experience on this forum?
Page 55 of the R1200GS manual explains all, obviously adjusting it at night will help .
As will a torch, as it's dark.
