Bit of a strange one?

I have a 2005 R1200GS.

can a worn timing chain/ play in the chains cause the ignition timing to be erratic?

hear me out- there are 2 sensors or pick ups as used on the R1200GS- one just behind the alternator fan belt and one on the right cylinder head on the right cam gear?

my motor is idling rough- trying to get to the bottom of it , and it does seem to exhibit an ignition timing graph were by the ignition point changes and is not smooth - it deviates as much as 7 degrees from 6 degrees to approx 13 degrees then to sometimes - 2 degrees.

my thinking is that if there is a non regular, although fairly constant difference in rotational timing of the the reference points of where the 2 sensors read each other it will do this

the chains are not noisy?

thanks in advance

doubt you will beat a jughead answer here, I sugest a compression test:beer:

If you are able to plot the ignition timing, are you also able to get a plot of what the stepper motors are doing? It would be interesting to see if they have been pushed to the end of their range, giving the ECU less options...

Generally I have found that the rough idling improves by setting valve clearances, and resetting the steppers.

I am guessing that you already have a GS-911 ?

If it has recently become really rough, it could be a result of a trapped cable as suggested by Miff.

Welcome to the forum, BTW

Quite right.
apologies and thank you for the welcome.

yes I do have a GS-911 and if it is the same Jughead, we are already working on this one.

just thought I would post here as well to ask- we have a big GS comunity here and thought perhaps some of you blokes have had similar issues.

Shouldn't be any play in the timing chains due to the tensioner mechanism and guides. Stretched possibly but the output would still be constant.

More likely to be a faulty sensor. One measures crank angle, the other measures cam but you knew that already.

can any of you blokes help?

do any of you have a GS911 and own a 2005/2006?
and yours is running fine?

would it be possible to post your ignition timing graphs at engine idling as well as your lamda outputs

jug head and I have noticed that my bikes timing angles bounce around from 6 degrees to as much as 13 degrees and on Jugheads bike it is a much more linear graph but his ignition angle is -87 degrees?

thanks

i had this problem a few years ago on my 2005 bike it was the rhs lambda sensor .
i replaced both of them ,fixed in an instant :thumb2

thanks fizzer

can you tell me a bit more? ie

reason is the Lambda sensors are BIG money here in sunny SA, and need to be sure for sure.

also I disconnected both lamda sensors and it ran exactly the same??

Thanks for that

damm i wish i lived in europe sometimes.

stuff is cheap and available, and no crappy post office to have to deal with like here.

ok we have sun and you can ride as fast as you want without a number plate and you dont have to have insurance -no emmissions or noise regulation no MOT ect ect

not that i ride without a number plate................

i lived the UK for 4 years so i know what it is like, still the scenery is awsome, the A and B roads can be just magic to ride. I actually loved riding there too.
