Hi,

I looked up my back medicine Difene = Diclofenac = Voltaren in Wiki and found an unexpected consequence: Poor Zoroastrians!

Ecological problems

Use of diclofenac in animals has been reported to have led to a sharp decline in the vulture population in the Indian subcontinent, 95% decline in 2004, 99.9% decline as of 2008.[15] The mechanism is probably renal failure, a known side-effect of diclofenac. Vultures eat the carcasses of livestock that have been administered veterinary diclofenac, and are poisoned by the accumulated chemical. At a meeting of the National Wildlife Board in March 2005, the Government of India announced that it intended to phase out the veterinary use of diclofenac.[16]Meloxicam is a safer candidate to replace use of diclofenac.[17] It is more expensive than diclofenac, but the price is coming down as more drug companies begin to manufacture it.[18]
"The loss of tens of millions of vultures over the last decade has had major ecological consequences across the Indian subcontinent that pose a potential threat to human health. In many places, populations of feral dogs (Canis familiaris [sic]) have increased sharply from the disappearance of Gyps vultures as the main scavenger of wild and domestic ungulate carcasses. Associated with the rise in dog numbers is an increased risk of rabies"[17] and casualties of almost 50,000 people.[19] The Government of India cites one of those major consequences as a vulture species extinction.[16] A major shift in transfer of corpse pathogens from vultures to feral dogs and rats can lead to a disease pandemic causing millions of deaths in a crowded country like India.

The loss of vultures has had a social impact on the Indian Zoroastrian Parsi community, who traditionally use vultures to dispose of human corpses in Towers of Silence, but are now compelled to seek alternate methods of disposal.[17]
Diclofenac has been shown also to harm freshwater fish species such as rainbow trout.[20][21][22][23]

That explains it. I knew that in some places Zoroastrians had started using concrete-sealed burials and not vultures but I didn't know why.

Its happening in Wales too.

No vultures

Few trout

We have to bury our dead

Old dogs everywhere:D

Diclofenac is widely prescribed in the UK as a pain killer. I had a load of them when suffering with a kidney stone last year. I think it went under the brand name Voltarol.

Seems strange to prescribe such a drug when a side effect is renal failure ?

Maybe someone with more knowledge could advise here

I was also on diclofenac for a few months for a shoulder injury, but started to suffer more and more indigestion. When I mentioned that to the docs, they took me off diclofenac and suggested paracetamol instead.

I can't even take ibuprofen any more since it's the same family as diclofenac.

However I'm now on Omeprazol which is like a one-a-day indigestion tablet, and haven't had indigestion for months now. I must have saved a mint on Rennies/Gaviscon, etc...:thumb2

Difene;
off and on it - for 10 or 11 months.
Ash has to be the inhouse specialist on this though.
i think he's been on it forever. :(

only vultures i saw were the ones asking if i was selling the Airhead :augie

:D

I've used it a lot over the years for gout.

Although some people may be sensitive to normal human doses, most aren't and it is a very effective non-srteroidal anti-inflammatory.....back problems, joint problems, gout, all sorts of things are really helped by it.

The vultures are eating far more than they should for their body masses/type I guess, which is why it's affecting them...

(Paracetomol is also a deadly drug if you take too high a dose......try and buy two packets at a time from the supermarket for example, and you'll be told they cant do it. It's not something you should worry about though ;) )

Drugs finding their way into the food chain like this is actually a lot more of a threat than people realise.....growth hormones, fertility drugs for livestock, all sorts of stuff that has a short term positive effect on farming but potentially, a massive detrimental effect on human health in the long term.

Best not to eat vulture, then ?

So I can't just leave himself outside somewhere when he pops off :D

Wouldn't want to hurt the birdies :augie

Suppose I'd better bury him so:D

I'm playing with his laptop whilst he's busy that'll teach him to stay logged on:augie

a man was asked whether his late mother-in-law was to be buried or cremated?

"cremate her and then bury the ashes - take no chances!" he replied.

i know my wife is on a lot of medicine, and what is seen as a cure 10year ago turned out to be what caused her kidney to fail for the 2nd time so just coz doctor tells you take it check yourself
