Hi folks,

I'm hunting for a Porsche Boxster/981 as my first Porsche, so I'm not looking to splash out a huge amount.

I'm open to one that needs some work/TLC, but I'm also happy to stretch the budget for a really solid, well-sorted example.

What’s available out there? Any recommendations on which generation or model year to target? (Especially since I'm 6'2" and these look like perfect wee weekend toys!). Also not fussed auto or manual would look at both..

I'm based up on the Western Isles in Scotland, so distance isn't an issue if it's the right car, I'd much rather have a known history and good provenance than worry too much about mileage.

Cheers for any tips! 🚗

Thanks
Mark

NOTHING to do with me But looks ok
PORSCHE boxster is a VERY small car * 986) I'm 6feet02" it was a tight fit when I had mine
I sold mine on this forum As I was struggling with gear changes and needed a bigger automatic car
Mine was a 5 speed 2.7 yr 2000 with 80k miles a few yrs back

Mark, for your height I would recommend the 981 - decent one around 20-25 k. 987s are great, 986's a bit nippy for lads our size, but the question should be "which boxster should I buy for my budget of XXX and what should I look out for (Water header tanks, corroded cooler radiators, and so on. IMS bearings less of an issue these days. Great cars and don't cost much to service yourself. Biggest way to buy a real headache is buying a cheap car with dodgy service history - then you'll see some big bills

Thanks, good to know..

Ok do better going for the larger cars will start a look for 981 then..

What about 2007 cayman models they still on small side for tall folk and should look at the 2012 on as you suggest?

Yes, buying cheap is not the way to go. I’d rather hopefully find one on here that someone’s owned and fussed over..

I have a 987.2 Cayman 2.9 manual, I'm 6'3" and have no problem, the gen2 cars are much better, and I'd sell mine if you're interested ...

Loved my Cayman and was a lovely weekend toy but I did worry about future costs. Had it 18 months and only cost me tyres and a service. I sold it then as whilst it looked fabulous on the drive I still ride bikes and that’s enough toys for the weekend.

Having said this we just got my wife a second car for fun and it’s a mini convertible cooper s……as much fun as the Porsche, more room (surprisingly) and I think handles better…….lots of fun but not the image of the porsche but it puts a massive smile on my face when I drive it and can’t wait for summer and the hood down and wind in the little hair I have left

Hope you find a good Porsche and enjoy it

Call with your nearest Porsche independent and ask their advice. You never know what you will hear or find. In my case a 944 that had been abandoned due to the cost of repairs. I wish now id the sense to have kept it. Sold it for double what it cost me. I couldn't buy it back now for 5 times that.

Thanks for this, I’ll take a look around these as you say.

Cheers

We had a 987.2 - Bought wisely and had it 4 years. Didn’t lose a penny on it. You’ll need to look after the roof and if in doubt get a Cayman. Also make sure you have a decent local independent specialist.

I’m 6'1” and my 987.2 is plenty big enough - 987.2's are the last to have hydraulic assisted steering

Video is for the Spyder versions but it’ll give you a taster on the differences

The best value Porsche you can buy is the one in the very best condition.

I am on my 8th one so have some experience. and do 95% of my own servicing and repairs

A 911 the ultimate Porsche IMO, but second to that I would love a 928, yeah! many didn't think much about a front engine car, but I do, and still love the look of them.
A modestly clean one needing some TLC bought at a favourable cost, once sorted can fetch a good market resale price.
