They are all twats.. sorry tossers, yes it is a problem where to mount it on a GS BMW did not design it in for the uk ...all ok in Germany because Number plates are be bought which are valid all year round or between 2 to 11 months within any 12 months. Showing the road tax. This allows to save money on vehicle usually driven in particular part of the year, eg. motorbikes. So it all on the number plate. Not a lot of tossers know this, cos they are all off road god's.
However it is differcult to mount a tax disc on a uk GS .. stick it on the screen! :aidan
Hope this helps

ValleyBoy, PLEASE don't do what I did with my 1200. I unbolted something or other to do with the camchain tensioner..what a cock i am!!! (or was told it was something to do with the tensioner anyway)...
Happy to help..... oh and im pretty good at being a cock by the way having had lots of practise. I used to just let my 1200 warm up by itself while i went and got all my bike kit on. I did this one night with most of the hangar lights off and was surprised to see the downpipes on my bike glowing cherry red. I later read on the forum, after posting some very hot exhaust pictures, that this can kill your engine and it is not advised that you do it EVER....

So there you go..

No it's not.

Perzactly, maybe I should have written exhaust power valve, thanks for explaining.
It's not an exhaust power valve. It's a " Lets get round the noise emissions regulations by fitting this otherwise useless valve thingy and make us some more money to spend on bratwursts and bier YA" (In ze cherman accent if you vouldnt mind ya verstehen sie.......

HTH :aidan

I've very much enjoyed this thread, I have my tax disc holder bolted to the frame just below the left-hand side cylinder head.

The main problem I have is that my tax disc doesn't spin as quickly as I would have hoped, so - what type of oil should I put in my tax disc holder to achieve the correct amount of spin in relation to revs applied via the throttle?
Also, where is the oil insertion point for my tax disc holder?

Valleyboy - ignore them all, there are plenty of us here who can ask questions that will get more sarcastic replies than yours. . .

If it helps, mine was mounted on the inside of the nearside pot on my vanilla GS, then my GSA and on my HP2 Sport. No, my foot did not catch it when changing gear nor did it fall off... That the tax disk itself was permanently out of date is another matter entirely.

Sorry, I do not have any pictures to hand but will definitely take one next time I am on my way to the root vegetable shop if that helps.

Well, boys and girls, it's your lucky day. I had to go to the garage to take another picture, so I took the opportunity to point the Box Brownie near enough in the right direction. It saved waiting until I hit the road on my way out for a root around in the root vegetables section.

Here, for your delectation and delight, is mine in all its glory on an HP2 Sport:

No it has not fallen off. That's obvious really or I would not be able to take a picture. There again, I may be posting up an old picture, pretending it was taken just today. You will never know.

It (the paper bit) may well rotate as I beetle along but it being by my foot makes it hard to see.

Yup, it's well over a year out of date. I have a current one but I'm fecked if I can recall where i put it. I know that's incredibly naughty but sometimes you just have to push the envelope of daring.

Yup, it's the cheap crappy version of holder that came free with the bike. Do you think I should buy a carbon fibre one?

Mine's on a French motorway somewhere - having fixed it in exactly the manner shown in Wapping's picture

Now this is interesting and not a little disturbing.

Did the bolt unscrew itself due to vibrations (or not being done up properly)?

Or

Did the support stem of the roundel break, due to vibration?

Or

Did the plastic cover come off, due to vibration (or incorrect fitment)?

So many possibilities. Your urgent reply would be appreciated as I am getting very worried.

Support stem breakage which usefully left a small stub that I was planning to claim was the result of someone having stolen the disc if challenged

Sadly I think Steptoe discarded the tab at the last service

Was a while ago now - the current disc is in a drawer somewhere, and I'm too scarred by the whole experience to try and fit it

Phew.

I will check mine on a regular basis. Thanks for the heads-up. :thumb2

It is a shame the tab has gone as it could have been fatigued tested and / or run under an electron microscope / had its molecular structure examined for a definitive answer.

Has nobody thought about emailing BMW's technical department and asking them for a definitive answer?

Or write to MCN's Help Desk?

Oh do keep up please.

This topic has been highlighted and your otherwise sensible suggestion will fail. The Hun know nothing of UK tax disks, so will not help at all. Disgraceful, I know....

It was all explained pages back:

I am not quite sure Seaweedmaster embraced himself within the broad scope of twats though. I do hope so.

OK..you win....I have had enough.....can't take anymore.....never going to open this thread ever again...

A very good rule my friend - and if you ever come to a UKGSer meet you'll soon find that the type of thing that is said on here is repeated to people's faces.

Its what makes this a cracking place. :thumb2

Oh and my tax disc? In the garage :augie

I got pulled two weeks ago for exiting a roundabout "rather sharpish" in Mr. Plod's words.

When he had established that I was the owner, seen my drivers license and taken the piss out of my personalised plate he went for a walk around the bike - I knew what was coming.

"I was just looking amongst all the other stickers to see where your VED disc was?"

'Oh' sez I - 'its back home officer - I didn't want it nicking'

"Well you qualify for a £60 fine then" he tells me. And then goes into detail about how you can now buy high tech disc holders that don't allow the scrotes to remove the disc in one piece and suggested I get one.

"Ok Officer" I says. When we had exchanged more pleasantries I risked it - 'So will I be getting a fine then?'

"Certainly not he says" grinning - "I'm not fining anyone today"

And after I had given him my email so he could sign me up to another Bikesafe course (last one done about 7 years ago) we parted on very pleasant terms.

I like cops me :kissy2

In England Plod have no power to posecute for fail to display VEL, so if you were in Blighty, the cop was bull-shitting. Also, I'm pretty sure it was a 30 quid fine the last time I looked.:rob

Would it be helpful if I were to point out that here in France we don't have tax discs?
