ok, my nice new bike and F650GS, not even 1 month old is at the minimum level of oil and the red oil light comes on and stays on for a time after I have started the bike up, but it does go off. There is also a run of oil running down the right side of the engine and leaving drops on the engine protector thing - intially I thought it was just the scottoiler leaving excess but now I'm beginning to wonder. I've done approx. 780 miles - should I be having to top up the engine oil already?

:rolleyes:

Let me give you a couple of clues here '74;

The oil's at its minimum level

You have a leak.

Now what do you think???

:rolleyes:

PUT SOME CHUFFIN OIL IN IT!!!! :)

and then take it straight back to the dealer, as Stella says 'after you've put some 'chuffin oil in it' - 10/40w will do

Ye, thanks for that. I'm just new to biking so not entirely clued up about the mechanics of a bike yet, if it is a leak, its a slow leak and it must occur when I am on the move, because there is never anything sitting under the bike - this is why I wondered if it was actually a leak. Perhaps the dealer didn't put much oil in it, I dont know. I will keep you posted however.

Checking the oil level on the 650s is a bit of a black art.
A blip of the throttle (before switching off) can lower the level in the tank.
Check the level each time with the bike in the same postion, at the same temp, after ticking over for the same time etc etc and then monitor if the level is going down.

Just make sure you don't over fill it, and then cause a leak!

Went to BMW last night and everything is fine, the oil is at the appropriate level, and the oil that is running down the engine is coming from the Scottoiler - apparently is was on too high a setting (6), so that has been corrected and when the bike goes in for a service on Monday its getting a full valet + all the normal checks, so I'm chuffed about that - faith restored and mind at rest. Thanks for the advice "thumbs up"
