I saw somewhere that BMW was launching an 800cc version of the RT, but I can't find any information. Does anyone know if it's true or just speculation?

When you say 'somewhere'...where was it that you saw it...maybe a nippy normans email?
Discussed here earlier in the week...

Yes, that's it thanks. I can't find any more info though.

Back in the early 00s....in the UK we got the R850GS and the R1150GS...but just the R1150RT....in France they also got the 850 engined RT...the R850RT..

Unless they resurrect the belt drive of the F800GT ? (doubtful)
That would be a good compromise. But they would probably just add a fairing to one of the current 800/90's

Whilst a smaller, lighter touring version would be welcomed, all attempts I've made in the past to recreate the stability and grunt, especially two up, with mid capacity machines has resulted in me going back to a larger, gruntier touring bike. Personally, and especially with pillion and luggage, I prefer the space, comfort and grunt of the 1250RT. Of course for those travelling alone, happy to use an 800/ 900 twin (lets face it, whilst considered "middleweight" these days it's still a fairly large capacity machine) and if it has a similar degree of weather protection, comfy saddle and upright riding position, this could prove a popular recipe for some. I can't see myself being tempted. The 1250 is by far the finest touring machine I've ever owned.

The pure tourer market has diminished over the last 10-15 years... Look how Honda dropped a Pan type bike and everyone else bar BMW has tried and failed to get a good enough share of a shrinking market in the face of the adventure bikes.. The RT is really the only bike of it's type left and there are so many other bikes like smaller ADV bikes or sports tourers in this cc range BM would have to have a very good reason for bothering...

Well, Honda have had good success with their new Wing and it's good to see the return of the sports tourer, a segment missing for quite a while. This to me points towards a shift to more touring oriented machines as not everyone wants a tall adv bike, but they will still continue to dominate for a while yet I suspect. There's certainly room for a decent sensibly designed bunch of pure touring machines providing cost is less prohibitive. I see the slow take up as more economics than a lack of interest. Most pure touring bikes are at the more expensive end of the market. BMW have it right imho...a really capable tourer which is more sports touring, and more manageable in the RT than the larger K1600 whose sales have diminished. I'd love to see a return of something like the excellent K1200RS or similar sports tourer and wouldn't hesitate to buy one of those over a big adv bike.

For most...a touring based bike makes far more sense than an Adv based bike (of which, very few will ever leave tarmac) The manufacturers know it so bang out Adv style bikes for several grand more than an equivalent road biased bike....Honda, as an example. On the continent you see a wider variety of bikes and far more road bikes....riders in the UK have (me included) drifted from Sports bikes in our 20s, to Sports tourers and thence to Adv bikes.
Honda Hornet 750 (c£7500) v Transalp 750 (c£9000)
NT1100 (c£12700 incl panniers) v Africa Twin (c£13250 minus panniers...so £14k with them)

Good comments but I'd say the RT is in a league of it's own now as Wings and K16s are a whole different game... The RT WC has basically taken over the RT and Pan market and a smaller engines tourer would be a market sector of its own but possibly without customers to support it .. after all who uses an ADV bike for anything other than road riding and limited miles aka PCP miles at that...

Err, me. Just short of 14000 miles in under 2 years. Col de Somellier, numerous other passes in the French Alps. Many, many miles of tracks dirt roads in Norway. A good few green lanes in the Dales. If I didn’t go off road occasionally I’d buy a more road orientated bike.
The ones that buy big adventure bikes but never take them off the tarmac seem to try to convince themselves that nobody else takes theirs off road too. Some of us do use the bikes for designed purpose occasionally.

Wasn’t there also an R900RT in Europe when they moved onto the 1200s. Seem to recall some parts listed as for both. Think they were police spec only though. If only they built some poverty spec R900GSs too. Would love a newer version of my 850😂

There's always one...😂👍 Well done but if you look at most of the 1200/1250GSs, Africa Twins etc al you'll deffo be in the minority...😁 A speck of dirt or two to many riders these days gives them palpitations...😂 And buyer expectations are in opposition to using and even lightly abusing a bike these days.👍

I must confess I've never heard of one (and a quick search on a Europe wide bike sales website doesn't bring any up...but does bring the R850RT up)
Dunno if this will work

Then there's the classic bike market as the resurgence in popularity of the R80RT/R100RT and RS models seems to be quite buoyant for the present. I've toured countelss miles on a humble R65 which took me nearly 2000 trouble free miles on one trip, loaded up with tent and camping gear. That was a holiday to remember, through the Massive Central and onto the west coast of France. I'd happily own a well sorted R100RS air head. Pretty bullet proof motors.

The fussy buyers certainly wouldn’t want mine then. I dropped it on the Col de Somellier and broke some bodywork. That was back in August, I haven’t fixed it yet. I’m considering just keeping it as is. Battle scared. It’s not as heavy as those Lardy girls. I swapped my S10 for my current Tiger 900 Rally Pro as it’s 63ks lighter. Still bloody heavy when I drop it though 😂.

Yes. In the UK BMW Authorities sold the smaller version of the 1150RT - an 850 - & followed that with a 900 version of the 1200RT. Some Forces bought them for driving school usage; students on the smaller version, instructors on the 1150/1200. IIRC there was not a great deal of interest. The Met. bought quite a few of these F80GT-P. I tried a demo. version for a couple of days & liked it.

This is where I saw it.. on the RealOEM parts site

The state of our roads is another big facter in why so many of us have swapped to adventure bikes. As much as I love my Pan it’s getting harder each year to ride on our rutted, pot holed and ever more collapsing roads. Riding on road is the new offroad for most of us.
