Has anyone powder coated thier spoked wheels? whats the verdict?
Mine are badly corroded around the centres and rims are pitted. spokes are tight and in good condition though.
I was thinking of getting them blast cleaned and epoxy powder primed then i'll 2 pack paint them all over with satin black.
I know of a wheel refurb place near me that specialises in powdering alloy wheels. They strip and blast with very fine medium to a high spec and powder with this epoxy powder primer.
Would appreciate any feedback or comments before i decide on my corse of action.
cheers
Ron

I've seen it done locally by a couple of the dealers selling cheap older japanese motocross bikes.
They reckoned that they didn't have any problems but not sure if i would trust it.
I know of people who've had rims powder coated before rebuilding wheels and the coating has settled loosening the spokes off in service.

Have no idea of an answer Ron but out of interest what the name of the specialists? I'm considering a little project :augie

Its NU-Look wheels in Carrickfergus.
Sent them a rear adv rack i got off Vern for my project as it was corroded. they blasted it and epoxy primed it with a high build powder. I choose to paint it with 2k paint to the colour i wanted. only £20 and it was a great job.
I talked to them today and they want to see the wheels before commiting as they haven't done spoked before. cant see why it wouldn't do the job its formulated to specifically adhere to alloy. Im no expert in powder but im a paint sprayer by trade. If you need anything wet painted Roger give me a shout, as long as its not too big i could probably do it for you. I can supply special epoxy primers and any solid colour you need. No metallic mixing station but i can do this as long as you supply the base colour and laquer.
If they wont powder them i my get them blasted and wet paint them with epoxy primer and 2k satin black.
cheers
Ron.
What's the project?

Had mine done as they were pitted & corroded took the discs off & blasted then powder coated silver worked a treat :thumb

Falcoran,

I have a 97 1100 gs, in good order except for the wheels, i would love to have them re done but don't like the idea of having the wheels de-spoked-sounds expensive and risky, would like to know how you get on with your project.

Good luck

Will let you know Keith, Will go up on friday and see them and see if they will do them and costs, turnaround ect.

I'd be very keen to see how this turns out too. The quotes I had to get work done were "prohibitive" at best. Gave up on it after doing the sums and decided to go for teh rat Bike look throughout....... :augie

What were the quotes to give me an idea

Okay this is the quote as sent to me, verbatim: "I would imagine that the spokes/nipples will not be reuseable unless they are stainless which would be very unusual.
You could have the whole wheel, inc spokes, rim and hub, powercoated with a polyurethane lacquer over the top of whatever colour you choose: £75.00 per wheel, without lacquer £55.00 per wheel.
If we can strip out and re-use the spokes it will be £65.00 per wheel with new nipples.
To strip the spokes out and rebuild with NEW s/s spokes £150.00 per wheel.
Powdercoat rim £35.00 with lacquer, £25.00 without, each rim.
Hubs £38.00 powdercoat with lacquer, £28.00 without, each.
If you send them down with tyres on we can remove/replace at £20.00 per wheel, discs and bearings will need to be removed aswell. £20.00 to remove/replace front wheel bearings, £15.00 to remove /replace discs (assuming no bolts sheer/strip)."

To be fair, the bloke that sent it was helpful and quite upfront about it being a pain on BMW wheels especially. No complaints with what he offered, just out of my range!

those prices say to me "We do not want this work, its too much hassle"!!!!

Or it means that they know exactly what a pain BMW wheels are to strip and rebuild and they offer a comprehensive service to strip and rebuild them to a high standard.
I've had enough powder coating done over the years to realise it is worthwhile getting a specialist in bikes to do it rather than much cheaper local companies.
One local firm to me had three attempts to get my silver katana frame right and F***** it up each time. yes it was only £75 but in they end they damaged the frame welding by overblasting it.
I ended up going to BBS coatings in Edinburgh. They stripped the frame had all the welds redone and coated and lacquered the frame for £125.
Eight years later it is still in excellent nick.
If I was going to the trouble of having the wheels stripped I would go for powder coating on the hubs BUT have the rims polished and anodised there are a couple of firms offer it for the offroad world and it is a more appropriate coating for rims, especially spoked ones (less likely to get damaged when tyres are changed).

Thanks for the info guy's.
Didnt get up in the end will try this weekend. Not in a mad rush but will have to do something to them they are doing my nut in. Corroding faster than a suger cube in water!
If they will do them im going for a full blast and powder over the whole lot without stripping spokes out. Just dont know what colour Black or silver?
