Sad git that I am I actually read the manual earlier this evening. Page 93 does state that onboard socket No.2 is an optional extra.

In a quandry as to what to do now, looking at the BMW socket there are three wires going to it - red/white and blue and brown I think - which is positive, which is negative and what's the other one for?

If you're talking about the GPS socket, I think the 3rd wire is something like a speedo data feed. You can identify the power wires with a multimeter, or if you like I'll take a look at my wiring when the bike gets back from the dealers (new clutch master cylinder, my first breakdown, I was feeling so left out :D )

Got one fitted by SPC a few weeks ago when I took it in for them to fix the brake squealing. Cost about £90.

Just the point we were discussing on the other Touratech cockpit thread. Look forward to hearing how you get on. I ran out of time fiddling last night and a quick feed back when you have succeeded would be a great help.
