Right, I'm now officially confused.

I can find the GPS socket.... and that's it. I know that the socket described in the manual as "Socket 2" is an add-on, but what exactly is the craic with "Socket 1"? Does it actually exist?

:banghead:

Its just underneath the sub frame seat support, where the rider and pillion seats join, just below that point slightly recessed, you'll see the cover.

The bike as standard has two power sockets.

One is, as described above, on the left hand side, below and slighly to the rear of the rider's seat.

The second, which is intended to power a BMW Navigator GPS, is at the front of the bike, also on the left hand side, in the space between the tank and the headstock. If you make a suitable adaptor you can power any low drain electronic device from this socket, I would think. If you draw too much power, the bike should simply cut the supply, but I've had no problems running my Streetpilot 3 from this socket for the last 8 months or so.

This picture shows the GPS power socket (arrowed) and also the optional beak power socket (kit available from BMW for about £25).

First rule of engineering is RTFM. (Read The Fecking Manual).
First rule of GSing is obviously BTFM! (BURN The Fecking Manual!!!)

I'll now have a half-hour rant 'round the house. :p1zzed:

Mouse, Al, cheers lads. :bow

Allroad, using the GPS socket (Mouse's first pic) is probably the easiest option, and the one I'm going to use (initially, at least). You could wire direct to the battery (via suitable fuses & switches etc.), but since the cable's there why not use it?

The only downside to using the GPS power socket provided, is that it turns off pretty quickly after you turn the ignition off. The manual says it should stay on for 15 minutes, but mine stays on for more like 1 minute.

Same goes for the normal auxiliary power sockets. This was annoying when I was on holiday, and trying to charge my GameBoy Advance from the bike, I had to leave the keys in :D

I may, at some time when I can be bothered, wire up a second beak socket on my bike direct to the battery.

GPS Socket

Mouse did you buy a plug to go into the socket or have you
just spliced the wires together ?

I just poked bare tinned wires into the socket and held them in place with tape and a cable tie :)

Has worked like that for months now.

Cheers :thumb
I used a couple of tiny self tappers and soldered the wires onto them ;)
