HELP!! R1200GSA Late 07. Just tried to start the bike yesterday and the computor came up with EWS fault and nothing on the starter or main power. Battrey voltage showing 13.6v and fully charged. Turning the igition switch on and off a few times the head light comes on at times and at others its a dim front side light, fuel pump does not run and it also says no fuel but the tank is over half full. The main display panel dips on and off and now today no EWS fault and the starter clicks. Voltage still 12.9 volts and even tried a nother battrey still the same! Called Linds yesterday and they said it sounds like the battery with the EWS fault but now thats not there. im thinking its a main power supply relay connection or unit. Any ideas??? Cheers. . . Lind say they cant even pick it up for over a week!!!!:augie

EWS is the immobiliser, be sure that you only have one key on your key ring (2 keys can cause EWS errors).

It sounds like your battery is not providing power via the ignition switch and also it could be that your starter relay or starter relay socket wiring is faulty (corroded?). The starter relay is located in the tool tray under the seat, usually Yellow socket, easy enough to check and eliminate.

The headlamp should only illuminate after the engine starts, prior to cranking you should only get the small 'sidelight' lamp immuminated.

There are a number of bikes that have suffered from faulty contacts within the ignition switch, this could well be the problem with your bike.

Yeah you seem to have a simular conclusion to me. What is odd is the head light started coming on a few times as well as the sidelight very dim at times and normal at others.
The EWS is now not showing fault and the ring has had the mod unit fitted. Its generally very good condition and looking at all the main connectors under the tank they are all very good and non corroded but i will check the starter solenoid in the morning. It just clicks like a stuck coil or low power.

If the switch has contacts for all these induvidually then it could point to that. cheers. :bow

I recall a post on here which said there are two microswitches operated by the ignition key and the person posting said they were sticking, the dealer replaced them and his problems were solved.

If I can find it I'll post a link.

Cheers, information is god !!! Will let you know what happens. :rob

Well the suspicion has now gone back to the battery. Cant find anything wrong with connectors to starter or main switch but connected a starter jumper pack and it started. Looks like the amp's are dropping way to low on start. Why the display has done what it has in the previous posts im baffled, anyone got any ideas why the CAN-Bus does what it does if the power is low? Battrey ordered from MDS battries. . . .hope the next post is a smiley one!!

:) Thats exactly what mine did when the battery died.....
EWS, fault every light on the dash and yet on a meter the battery showed a decent voltage, BMW recovery however said dead battery, Jumped it to test everything properly then replaced the dead battery with a working one and job jobbed....:thumb2

Just very odd way to run a system on a go anywhere bike. Sytem shuts down if battery dies. It appears the Canbus is seeing a fault on various units due to low voltage even though it says 13 volts. This then turns stuff off and can retest and reset when its ok again hense the funny on/off dash. Will see what happens when battrey arrives.
BMW should put a reset and self test that can be done by the owner to see what the system is doing at least then a dealer is not required for a naff battery. . . i.e. £50 recovery, labour £50 plus dealer battery £100 !!!!!

Ho hum!! :blast

I never tire of repeating myself: Open circuit battery terminal voltage is no measure of capacity, only a load-based battery drop tester can determine how much capacity a battery has.

Sadly we dont all have a discharge test unit to hand and voltage is all we have to go by. If only it was that easy!! :augie

It is fairly easy, actually. You measure the voltage as it is cranking. Below 11v and falling points to lack of capacity.

EWS display is common when the battery is virtually.

even after jump starting te bike can still die if the battery is at such a low level.

typical of bmw to make the systems rely on a battery even with the engine running.

Maybe its cos im not used to the cambus system. Did the voltage drop and first time after charging it was down to 8 volts but then jumped it from my car battrey and it stayed up at 12 but still didnt turn it over so a little confusing but a hi amp starter unit started it..... beat it into submission! Will fit new batrey tom and see what happens. :thumb2

why is it so odd for an electrical system to malfunction when there is a problem with a lack of electricity?

Not sure i said it was odd for a system to malfunction, just that i ddint understand what was going on compared to teh normal sysyems im used too.

Anyway! New battrey and we have a running bike.

Thanks for the helpful input.. well from the help full anyway! :clap

this makes good reading.my bike, also an 07 would not start today and showing all the signs you describe.would not jump start from my car tonight so it looks like new battery is required.my bike is always on datatool trickle charge so strange it has failed?

I dont trickle charge mine as i dont have the alarm on when garaged. Its got a big FO chain on it. The batteries fail after 3 years, thats life i guess. Mine would not start with the car connected but did with a emergency starter unit! New battrey and lifes good again! :beerjug:
