Power supply for GoPro

Hi Guys,

I am facing an issue... I have removed the DIN socket and fitted the double USB socket ( 2.4 Amps and 1 Amp) using the existing Power supply (CAN BUS). From my research this is a 12v power supply. As I connect my GoPro, it works for 2 to 3 minutes and then it switches off. As the GoPro takes only 5v and 1 Amp I assume that its a protection mechanism by shutting down.
Can someone throw some light into this? Suggestions accepted and if a wiring diagram is available I would be very grateful.

Is the GoPro "idling" or recording in this scenario?
Also, what bike is it?

If the power feed is shutting down I guess is that the GoPro might not be drawing enough power and the feed is shut down (either by CanBus or the socket you fitted).
USB sockets already step down the voltage to 5v.

I power my GoPro through a large external battery from my backpack. If the camera is not recording and has a full internal battery, sometimes the external battery doesn't "sense" it because of the low/null power draw and shuts down.
Not sure if something similar is happening in your setup.

Hi, thanks for you reply. The camera records for 2 to 3 min and then shuts down. But that happens as well if it's idling. The bike is a BMW R1200GSA LC 2017 model. Interesting that you mention that the USB already steps down to 5v. I guess I have to try your solution (external power bank) and see if the camera stays on or switches off. Ideally I would prefer a power supply from the bike or battery.

Some go pro's won't run when being charged.

My go Pro 11, is connected to the power outlet by the clocks, that has a twin usb charger plugged in. Using the Gopro pass through side. All works perfectly.... mines a 2016 GSA

I would prefer a power supply from the bike or battery.

100% agree. But keep in mind that mine can run all day long off the external battery.
In my case I prefer using a battery as I keep the GoPro on my backpack strap and the battery is in the backpack. I wouldn't want to be tethered to the bike.

GoPro’s are unpredictable and have a mind of their own. I have a 9 and a 12. The 12 runs flawlessly but the 9 even when attached to an external power bank seems to have a mind of its own. It works when it feels like it but if it fancies a day off then it declares a Bank Holiday.

Yes, I use a 7 and sometimes it "freezes", so I have to take the battery out.

First thing I would do with OP's GoPro is a hard reset and firmware update/check.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have gone for a Thunderbox + USB that will connect to the battery. Lets hope the GoPro will cooperate
