Has anyone had any experience of installing a power lead for an Ipod to work in conjunction with an Autocom. I've got the signal lead sorted but I'm not sure what to do regarding power. Dealer just looks at me as if I'm weird. Is it too much to ask? I'm off to the Algarve next month and the Ipod only lasts about 3 hours......

Not an Ipod, 'cos only posy rich twats have them ;), but other MP3's no prob......

Take a car charger, strip the connections back, add an inline fuse holder, whack the bare end connections either onto the battery direct or onto the connections on the back of the Aux power socket....job done.

I assume the 1200 has the BWM type plug and socket....you can get them for 3 or four quid from any tractor shop and wire it onto the bare leads of the iPod charger.....centre pin +ve, outer connection -ve.......

The options are endless....up until today when I rewired everything to power some more gadgetry, I had a BWM/normal socket converter on one of my aux sockets, with the female end cable tied to a cross member...I then plugged a normal 12v car charger into that and kept the MP3 player in my jacket pocket, running at the same time as charging.....worked perfectly and will do the same on a 1200

You can also run a power supply to a tank bag or handlebar bag, then wire that to a multi point ciggy lighter socket adaptor thing (about a tenner from Maplins) to charge Ipod, Phone and whatever......

Basic rules though....even though it's canbus, fuse protect whatever you do.....keep the transformers in (I don't spose Ipods like 12v direct ;) ) and keep things as waterproof as possible.......

HTH

PS additional Aux sockets are pretty cheap (less than a tenner) so if you don't have one on your beak, get one in quick....takes 30 mins to wire up ;) )

PS route all leads as far away from other electrical parts as possible and keep them as short as you can while allowing for tugging...long leads=interferance.

Well that about sums it up then. Off to Maplins tomorrow! Thanks for the advice. Yours Rich Twat.....(Well not anymore after buying a GS 1200Adv AND an Ipod in the same month!)

Here's another option for you.....

Maplin's do Ciggy socketplugs....don't get an illuminated ring one or you may have probs with battery drain, but you can easily wire one (with inline fuse) to the battery and mount it on the dash/beak top edge etc....you'll need a bit of nerve, a small drill bit to make a pilot hole and 25mm hole drill (check the size though FFS...that's just a guess ;) ) plus a few feet of wire, cable ties etc, but it'll give you a standard ciggy socket accessory socket rather than having to have BWM pluglet types.

For the ultimate in kitch cool, make sure you plug the socket when not in use with a champagne cork to keep the water out :D

done it too!

I've just done the same - bought a car charger from Ebay at £4.00 delivered and then ripped it to bits! ( the pic shows another identical charger along side for comparrison)
The PCB inside the charger is about 11/4" by 3/4" in size and fitted nicely into a little plastic box I bought from my local electronics shop - power led showing through box - I'm lucky that I have a real shop not just a Maplins!
Sealed the box and placed inside a purpose made foam lined box (with lid) that's going to sit in the bottom of my top box underneath the luggage on longer trips.
The power supply is in the grey box in the middle and the power cable and sound output exit at the bottom just below the Boosteroo amp on the right.
The power is picked up under the pillion seat in the tool tray

You can get Boosteroo amps here and even on Amazon if that helps.

I fitted an Amprider produced by a guy in Canada, worked out at £35 shipped and no import duty. Not only does it provide superior audio the remote volume is a real bonus and easily adjusted even with gloves on.

Sherpa.

What about the wiring for direct connection? Were th colours easy to identify?

Do you have a link to the supplier on EBay?

iPOD Charger signal noise

I have a car charger for the iPod which I use (surprise surprise) in my car. My R1200GS had a power socket on the dash but if I try to play the iPod through the Autocom system while it is charging from the car charger routed through a cigarette-lighter-to-BMW socket converter I get a pulsing signal mixed into the sound output. Is this something to do with the bus BMW use? Can you filter it out somehow? I might end up trying some of the suggestions above which are probably better overall but I thought I would just check I wasn't missing a trick.

me too!

I've since found that I'm getting an interference source from the charger as well (probably why it only costs £4)
All I do now is listen to the music with the charger unplugged and then connect it when stopped or overnihght to top up Ipod

Sherpa ;)

will not mounting an ipod i pass to much vibration to the HDD? i thought you had to keep them in your pocket.

i'm interested 'cos i've got to find somewhere to put mine.

I have mine in an Aqua box using RAM mount components.

Between th damping of the RAM balls and the supplied internal foam the IPOD is well insulated from vibration.

You can find details on this thread

I managed to destroy the HDD in my Creative Zen Touch by putting it in my tankbag. It was picking up some pretty heavy vibes from the fuel tank. Luckily it was repaired under warranty.

I only use it in a goretex pouch in my jacket pocket from now on.

Don't forget...

If you power something from the bike, and run the audio through the Autocom (also plugged into the bike)... you will get gross interferance called 'ground loop interference' unless you run the signal through a doodger called a 'ground loop isolator'... Autocom sell them for big bucks.. they are the red colored bits on their cables.

But you can also get them at Maplins (I'm sure), Radio Shack and the like...
