Hi all,

Have a quick question for the more learned (than I) of the collective. The warranty on my 2016 R1200GS expires early next month. Do folks generally get their dealership to give the bike a health check to see if anything needs doing in advance of the warranty expiring?

I don't really have any specific issues that I want taken care of. The only possible issue I can think of is when the ignition is turned on, the butterfly valve in the exhaust squeaks when it calibrates - could be nothing, but if not I would much prefer for it to be sorted under warranty.

Also, I've received a letter from BMW telling me I can purchase another years warranty on the bike. At a not inconsiderate fee mind you... Do folks tend to opt for the extension or not bother with it?

Thanks in advance...:thumb2

I got a letter off my dealer inviting me in for pre warranty expiry check with a reminder that the bike was due its 2 year service

I wonder why ? :augie

So they can;
A. Get you in and try to sell you a new bike.
B. So they can declare the bike healthy and absolve themselves from any future problems.

Shakey, the born-again cynic.

It is a very personal decision. I will go for an extension. Labour costs at the dealer are not cheap and the bike has some seriously complicated electric toys. My 1300 GT had a Drive Shaft failure 2 days after the original warranty ran out! Fortunately I had purchased an extension. Although I think BMW would have helped out as the bike had only done 6000 miles! I complained bitterly to head office that a major component on a Marque motorcycle should not fail after 6000 miles. Some folk just salt away a little every month and work on the principle that a very expensive German built modern motorcycle should not have any major issues. I just go for peace of mind and the knowledge you still have BMW recovery. Your call.

Your bike is due its 2 yr Service (at least a Brake Fluid change) , take it in a few days early and ask for a health check also. if you intend to keep it, I would seriously consider the warranty especially if the machine has electronic suspension and standard exhaust (with the flap).

Health check, flap done under warranty, and take the extra year warranty, or buy a new bike and get 3 years warranty, its all your choice.

Had my RS done free of charge,a freebie from BMW is too good to miss,so if you have any issues they can be sorted before the warranty runs out. Free repairs(if needed)Free tea and biscuits,I'd call that a win win mate.

Extended warranty? You know how much my rear shock was to replace don't you. I took the extended warranty out for only 38 of Her Majesty's Great British Pounds a month. I won't miss the money if I have a few pints less a week and may lose my beer belly too.

What is the current renewal rate?

Am in the process of getting a quote - can't beat 10mins of being on hold!

Bike now booked in for 2 year service in local dealers. Have requested a warranty check too with specific mention of the exhaust flap. I do intend keeping the bike so warranty will be seriously considered... :thumb2

If only! Finances don't stretch to simply going out and buying a new bike. But if the quote isn't crazy, the extended warranty might be money well spent....

That will be a no brainer for me, extended warranty is a must, with todays bikes.

Quotes are as follows:

With Roadside Assistance included:

€0 excess
€482 single payment or €45/month (€540 in total)

€70 excess
€443 single payment

€135 excess
€409 single payment or €39/month (€468 in total)

No Roadside Assistance reduces overall premium by €30

That seems very reasonable, especially a simple breakdown can be costly, if you are overseas.

Do it!!!!! prior to end of 2 year warranty new gsap and a month before expiry of extended 3 year warranty new front (again ) and rear shocks and left hand switch gear (again) £3300 kerching.

New one has no esa, no gsap, no tft, no sos, no irrelevant sh*t so etc hopefully it will not need an extended warranty

I think the monthly option with the larger excess will be the way to go.

On the last GSA TE , ALL of the numerous issues were ESA , GSAP and other electronic pap related , the lack of all this essential (to some) crap has made it a better bike

What about other issues like corrosion, wheel issues, potential final drive problems etc?

The warranty ran out on my 2016 GSA at the end of August and my dealer 'suggested' that I book my bike in for a service / health check 3 weeks before so they could check it over (even though it has another year of BMW Used Warranty). They ended-up replacing the rear subframe under warranty as started to show signs of corrosion - didn't cost me anything and would have been more difficult to argue after the original warranty expired as used\dealer warranty isn't as extensive...

Worth having the extended warranty for peace of mind - still cheaper than a new bike!
