I am considering (very strongly) a 1200 GS. I have ridden one this week for the first time, after reading about them for a long time, and it seems to make sense.

So then you dip into the mire of Autotrader/private sales/dealer etc and it starts to get complicated.

So my question is buying a secong hand bike, what are the options worth? Hard luggage, ABS, Heated grips, compared to a bikes without. What are your views/experiances.

Its easy to walk into a showroom, see shiny, and then empty your brain and the your pocket...............................

Welcome to the site Spike :thumb

If you become a site sponsor it would give you full access to the For Sale and Wanted section.. you may find a fully spammed up 1200 and save yourself a bit of dosh as well ;)

Good sales pitch :thumb

But I wanted to know what you all think about the values of the extras second hand. Are they worth much? Am I better paying more and getting a fully spammed up one, and if so how much extra for the likes of luggage etc. Or would you go for something basic and then try and add stuff yourself. :nenau

Help me out, this stuff isnt cheap and Im from Yorkshire!!!

Spike, if it was me I'd go for ABS / Heated grips and thats about all at the dealers... (saying that I'd probably look for a fully spammed up previously loved one anyway)

Half the fun I reckon is buying bits and bobs after researching the market.. that way you end up with a bike kitted out exactly the way you want it....

For example... My 1150 ADV has had 5 sets of panniers on it in 15 months....I've now got a set I like ;)

Good luck with your purchase :thumb2

How long is a piece of string? Values are subjective.

Factory options such as ABS or heated Grips don't add much value because most GS's have them. The rule of thumb is that factory options are worth about half their original price second-hand.

When it comes to such things as luggage, the value depends on what you want. Some people will see BMW System cases as desirable and think that big square(ish) aluminium boxes are actually a reason to depress the price. The opposite is equally true.

Bryn's point isn't just salesmanship, if you subscribe you will see what real values are because most of the haggling and ultimate sale prices on the forum (parts and bikes) is conducted publicly.

All good advice and one aspect I picked up recently is if you do buy off a forum ad make sure it's someone with a good few posts under their belt. No guarantees but less likely to have one over on you for the simple embarrassment factor etc. Personally, I went the dealer route (twice_ with basic spec and spent time and not a little cash (it's still happening) getting it just to taste.

Good luck.
