I've bought a set of s/hand BMW mag wheels to have road tyres on for general riding around, the original wire wheels will then have a set of knobblies fitted for honing around off road. I am unsure of the model/year of GS that the mag wheels originated from.

The rear wheel fitted fine.

The front wheel fitted into the forks fine but the discs don't line up in the middle of the calipers.
Measuring between the brake discs the wire wheels are spaced 5mm wider apart.

On further investigating it appears that both wheels are the same (within 0.5mm) at the hub casting but the wired wheel has different carrier bushes/spacings that push the discs out further.

The discs themselves appear to be the same and it is just the bush/spacer that is the difference. I imagine the wired wheel discs are simply a later design than those on the mag wheels.

So is it possible to get a later type of bush fitted (anyone know who does it?) as the discs are fine in other respects and being that a pair of discs are a rather expensive item and all that is required are a set bushes it seems to be worth looking in to.

Some more picces if you care to look.

i have the later single spoke wheels on my 2013 gsa and they with the matching discs went straight on.i think there is a difference in discs ie early ie your discs and the later ones, cant you put your discs on the cast wheels?.

Pre 2008 models have discs with removable bobbins (as you show). Later ones have discs with bobbins fixed to the discs.

I've done just that to see that the mag wheels will fit and work, but then of course it means that the wired wheels now have no discs. :blast

thats ok do what i did and get a 2nd hand set off ebay,i paid 120 for an almost brand new pair complete with abs ring.

I was running my 2011 gsa on gs alloys last winter, I used the gsa discs no problems

I made up a 2mm thick shim to fit between the calliper and fork leg, this moves the calliper central with the narrower type disc mount.
Pics somewhere if you need.:thumby:

I have the later single spoke alloys on my GSA. They came complete with discs and bolts and fitted straight on. They did however need to be chemical stripped and powder coated because corrosion was creeping under the paint. This also meant new bearings in the front.

For anyone planning to powder coat any alloy parts - use appropriate chemical stripping. The paint is too tough to remove safely by shot blasting. If you try the base alloy will be gouged before the paint is taken off.
