:nenauRight, just spent the last couple of hours, installing Vista. Went to upgrade my drivers for the graphics card, and I get the 'page cannot be displayed' notice. Vista has switched my AVG off, (not compatible). The diagnostics say there is nothing wrong with the internet connection.

Any ideas? Even if i take the risk and switch of the Windows security, it still will not display my Tiscali home page, or any other page, for that matter. It's driving me nuts! I have made sure that Internet Explorer is allowed access on my Options, but I figure, without internet security it will not let me on.

Don't know if this is any help but i have been told that if i upgrade to vista i would have to contact the service provider to upgrade the broadband package i have as the broadband service i have is not compatable with vista of course i do reside in the west of ireland not that that would be an issue????

Boot it up in safe mode - if it connects then is just the settings or firewall.

Don't run it for long though as you have not protection.

Your connection knows no difference, its what the PC is configured too.

If you are using a router with vista make sure it's set to PPPoA not the default PPPoE.

Vista and IE connection

Ignore your router settings, they will not have changed from whatever you had before.

Of course that's assuming your router was dishing out the IP address.

Some basic things, make sure under IE tools, Options, Connections, you are set to never dial a connection.

Most ISPs who provide disks just stick a load of stuff on your system. Most of the time you just pop username and password in the router.

Drop to a DOS prompt, type 'ipconfig' to see if you're getting a correct IP from your router. If it is dishing out something like 192.168.1.2, try typing 'ping google.co.uk' without the prompts. If you get a response you know it's a problem with your Vista config.

I work in IT and I struggle sometimes fiddling with Vista; XP rules:)

Cheers for that boys, working now. I done 2 things. After doing a lot of fiddling with Task manager and Options tabs and getting nowhere, I used my laptop XP to download a Vista compatible anti-virus. Uploaded it, but then also updated the drivers for my Modem. As I was online the whole time when loading Vista!

Agreed about XP, I only bought Vista, so my wife could learn it for herself, as she is a teacher in the local technical college. She needs to get to know her way around it before next year.

The only probs I'm having now is a grainy desktop, after upgrading my graphics card and no 3D graphics. Although Windows says I need at least 15 Gig of free space on my hard drive to get them working:nenau I've just managed to claw back 4 over the last 3 hours, now I'm upto 11.5 Gig free space. I'm starting to get very distracted with this....

Don't worry too much there.....you only need the 15gb initially, so you can save stuff to DVD then when it's installed, you'll only need 6gb (Still bloody ridiculous, but that's MS for you :blast)

What graphics card needs 15G for an installation?!?!?! That's enough room for 3 decent sized operating systems!

Right just to update! Everything is sorted.

The reason windows was telling me that it needed 15 G was prior to installation, and recommends a minimum of 40G Hardrive

That's not a problem.

I managed to get hold of an Nvidia Geforce 6600 Graphics card, the 6200 I had in must have been faulty, hence the specaliness on the screen. It's installed and running sweet! Plus it's far sharper, and quicker!

The 3D issue is now resolved: It was a settings issue as I suspected, but it is a bit intricate, as you must insure that Windows 3D Aero has all the compatible boxes ticked....

It now works a treat, and the simple Tab key lets me see all the open windows in 3D!

cheers for any input guys, most of the suggestions, had me correct something after a bit of a search, so Ta for all that!:thumb

Glad you got it sorted.

BTW, what's that very blue looking website in the middle - I wonder which one that is :augie
