Problem with one vario

Hi I've just come back from a 2000 mile trip to Spain and back and the exhaust side vario is sticking in the out position as I try to force it I can see the bottom popping up, I've only had the bike 6 months from new are they covered under warranty, I will call them tomorrow but wondered if anybody else had this problem or am I missing something I should be doing.

Yes accessories from BMW carry a full warranty, pretty sure that's two years. Don't accept a repair get it replaced, they did mine.

Mine have done this a few times when dirt/grit have got between the two sliding parts. Copious quantities of soapy water fixed it last time.

NB - I believe that if too much force is used, the two halves can 'get out of synch' with each other and jam completely.

You might get it done under warranty but they may also say you just need to give them a good clean.

Result. I had a good look at the Touratech ones at the weekend, so will probably get these on my next bike.

When I had the Varios I had the same problem. Worth spraying some PTFE Dry Film Lubricant in the mechanism rather than WD40 or an oil based lubricant.

After dropping a pannier I had to dismantle all the vario mechanism to seperate the two halves and re set the seal. The weight and complexity of the mechanism had me wondering if they are much use, I only use the panniers when touring and have never needed to retract them to the smallest position.
Im in the process of making a light set of brackets to replace all the inner workings, freeing up much more space and saving a considerable amount of weight.

really? Cannons didn't want to know about my problem...take the bike back to the original dealer where the previous owner bought the accessories... I didn't bother.

I had one stick, out of warranty, so stripped it down and just lubricated everything and put it back together again. Simples!

The mechanism is not complicated but you do need to keep an eye on where everything fits when you're taking it apart

I'd classify it at at skill-level numpty.
