I cannot increase the idle speed when balancing t/bodies. The idle is very low 500/600 rpm at an estimate, I used to have it set at about 900 rpm. Now it is difficult to stop from stalling at junctions etc. I have tried to increase as usual by winding out brass bypass screws but this makes no difference and induces a stall.
Bike is a '98 1100GS and I've done some of the usual checks- valve clearances, seating of throttle cables etc.
Recently replaced the fuel filter but cannot see how this could cause problem as there is no fuel starvation.
I have read plenty of posts about possible problems with coils, HT leads etc but am mistified as to how this would cause problems with setting idle (mind you I'm no expert obviously)!
Any ideas?!

Might be worth resetting the motronic unit and TPS position sensor.

Ignition off
remove fuse 5 (wait 1/2 minute or so)
ignition on
ignition off
replace fuse
fully open throttle and close a few times and give the bike a try .

Have you been messing with the battery at all - if so this may help but cleaning the brass throttle screws would be a good place to start as already suggested above.

on a 1100gs? don't think so...

Can you feel vibration at speed?.Thats a sign that the TBs need balancing.
What do you use to balance the TBs?.Twinmax, guages or manometer.
How many miles has the bike done?.Stretchy/sticky throttle cables at high miles make balancing TBs difficult.
Did you do the rocker end-float when you did the valve clearances?.
Are the plugs OK and did you try removing the Big Brass screw to clean the cack off the ends?.

hanks for suggestions so far, wil try a motronic reset as a start. To Timolgra's point, the left hand throttle body does rattle at the point the throttle slack is taken up. Could be indicative of TB wear?

My left TB is the loudest thing on my bike apart from the horn :D but the idle is fine, have you taken the BBS out and cleaned them and the holes they go into with carb cleaner?

have you checked that the throttle cable is seated in correctly NOT at the throttle body but as it passes under the tank, it may have become unseated there as it goes into a larger cable to protect it from rubbing under the tank
