I have had a strange issue on and off this year with my bike (1200GSA) struggling to start, when you hit the button the starter cranks but sounds like it is really struggling to turn the engine over. At the same time the lighting/display goes dim/blank until it finally manages to fire. It seems to do this when I have been running the bike and then stop for 5 minutes and try to restart. I have had the battery checked (although I am leaning towards a battery problem), had the starter replaced under warranty and a new clutch switch, but it is still happening. Could this be a symptom of an ailing battery even though the dealers gave it the all clear ?

I had this happen on my HP - but it was fixed with a replacement starter motor... but you've had yours replaced too... Was that recently?

It sounds like battery to me. Try a jump lead - donor car NOT running. If it starts normally the issue is battery. If not, its a starter problem or connections to it.

Yes that was the first thing that was done a few months back, followed by he clutch switch as that was failing sometimes and not allowing me to start in gear. The symptom with the new starter is the same although is happening less often. I did notice it more and more after trying a few times which makes me think it must be battery related. presumably an alternator problem would be easier to spot ?

I had exactly the same issue.

New battery sorted it:

A bright yellow "Motobatt" type from an eBay store, the battery gets good reviews on t'internet for repeated cold cranking amps.

Yes I saw your post about this, did the problem completely disappear ? Would you recommend this battery as I know the BMW version is £100+ ?

Yes, no more hesitant starting when hot. I believe this is because the new battery can deliver more amps when required, the original battery must have been a bit tired.

Very happy with the Motobatt battery.

Yes the Motobatt one is better I think and less than half the price. Think I will try this as I am pretty sure this is the culprit !
