I recently received from garmin a reconditioned quest with Chinese maps.

I loaded on the UK maps however the unit will not find 'Oxford Street in London' or my aunt's address in Kent.

Also when searching for addresses it simply powers off - this happens randomly?

I have tried emailing and calling Garmin but no joy.

Would anyone have any ideas on what else I can try. bTW I am running 3.90 firmware.

thanks

Sam

Sounds dodgy to me

Are you sure you have the UK maps loaded? If you zoom out as far as possible can you see them highlighted?

Also where does the unit think it is? If it thinks it's in China still it won't find any UK addresses. You need to go through the find satellites process and tell it you are in a new location - as detailed elsewhere on this forum.

Why have you had no luck with Garmin? If you ring them you need to be persistant and wait to get through but you'll get there in the end.

Even if he didn't have UK maps loaded, surely after searching for satellites the unit would show an UK basemap - wouldn't it? :nenau

Have you given the unit enough time to "search for satellites" ? The first time I tried my SPIII I initially got a map of Korea IIRC with a flashing "?". After about 6 minutes - but it felt like a lot longer it eventually found where it was in the UK. Personally, I would find a big open car park ie somewhere with as much uninterrupted sky as you can find, switch it on and leave it a good 10 minutes. If you can have the relevant screen showing how many satellites you have "acquired" it will make it more interesting, but if you're new to it, you may not have found that one yet. :thumb

If that doesn't work, sorry but I can't suggest anything else apart from contacting Garmin.

powering off

This seems to be a glitch from the last update - mine does it as well if you press 'OK' twice in quick succession when accepting a road name or address during the find process.
It's not really a problem and from experience will be sorted at the next upgrade I'm sure.

Sherpa ;)

spoke to Garmin

there is a glitch with version 3.90 - apparently if you enter O and U it will shut off. If you enter certain letters quickly twice it will do the same.

Also for some strange reason to find Oxford Street W1 you have to enter W1 as a number.

I think I go back to the earlier software version www.gpsinfomation.net (I think) and update with CN v 8

Cheers for all the advice
