Problems with R1200GS

My 1200GS arrived in March after being on order since April 2004. I had test ridden the GS and decided my Blackbird had to go.
I now sit in May having just been told that I cannot have my bike back from its first service(1000 miles on the clock) as the rear differential has gone and the bike is not safe to ride - I had commented on the unusual vibration earlier to be told that it would be sorted at the first service when they adjusted the balancer shaft. Previous to this bit of bad news I also had to have the battery replaced after two weeks.
Has anyone else had these problems?
I still love the 1200GS but can't deny this has taken the shine off my ownership experience especially coming from two totally reliable years with the Blackbird

sounds fairly unusual mate...I'm at 6k now since October '04 with not a single problem...

The only problem ( if it qualifies as being a problem), is that my 1200, now with 1100 miles up, tends to "stutter & stammer" at town speeds. I was told this would be resolved at 1st service, but not so. ( is that what "surging" is and can it be cured ?)
My 1150 was much smoother at low speeds and I can't recall having to get down to 3rd gear in town ( 30 or 40mph).

I am enjoying the bike, but not happy with it in town.

I have 2 friends both going through battery problems on new bikes. One had the battery replaced by BMW emergency and the other is struggling on. Both the same symptoms, battery fine off the bike, holds charge no problem. On the bike, something is discharging it within days. Both bikes going back to different dealers to resolve.

Hi!

Final drive replacement is something many of us has experienced. It's usually no big deal. (but do a search on "Dutchman and rear drive" you'll see another story)

But I'm surprised it happens to a bike being build in 2005.

Mine is a 07/04 build, and I change my finaldrive on the 1.000 km service.

Are you being serious?

I've had bikes way cheaper than the GS without any problems at all, paying £9k I would expect a standard AT LEAST as good as that of a £6k bike.

I agree with Coz can you imagine a BMW car driver putting up with it, and don't even mention a car fleet manager he would have the local dealers parts for lunch.

YES! They happen on all BMW bikes.

Even with the "problems", the 1200GS knocks spots off the Tiger any day of the week.

Akchooally it's not a dikshunharry wot I kneed. It's typing and proof reading skills.

And to Bob Southgate...No, the GS12 doesn't knock the spots off a Tiger. For a start it's Leopards that have spots. Tigers have stripes. AND, BMW have only just caught up with the Tiger in performance. Remember, the current Tiger is a 4 year old design.

Depends on how you define performance of course Howard. Its a shame the 4 year old Tiger lags behind the 11 year old 1100GS when it comes to handling, braking, protection from the screen and depreciation.
