Project Money Pit !

I only went to haggle over some forks and a wiring harness.

But came back with this..

Dug some spares out of the shed this afternoon and got to this..

It now also has handlebars, footrests and brake levers (forgot to take a pic)

I know I have a rear wheel and a few other suitable parts that I can root out.

The question is - do I build it or try and out it as the basis of a project ?

1. it's amazing what you can find in the shed, I dread to think how many parts I have floating around for various bikes and cars .. what has just happened is totally normal in my experience

2. If it were me I'd be asking myself which routes are in front of me:

Route 1. "I really just fancy the challenge of building up a bike" .. perhaps have a sketch of the final build then draw up a list and enjoy the part hunt and building it .. end product driven and can be incredible enjoyable

Route 2. "what do I fancy 'doing' on this bike .. is there an event or something you fancy completing on the bike, lots of options .. will still need a sketch but you have a specific design brief to work to .. becomes a means to an end but you then do something with it which is personal to you .. personally I find this more satisfying

Route 3. Pull all the relevant parts out and see if anyone else fancies route 1 or 2 and make room for another project

.. well .. could be a very ecological r80 G/S .. peddle power?

Hate to be pedantic,
That’s a mono rt frame/forks,
Either way,if you go down the route of building some kind of special,it pays to have a very clear idea of what you are looking to achieve,
In the 40 years these bike have been out there,it’s unlikely similar things to your plans haven’t been tried/ done before.
Give us a clue,it could save you a lot of time and dosh.

I’m lucky enough to already have the G/S project and my almost complete R60/5 based desert sled.

I have a garage loft of BMW parts collected over the years that I have been slowly ebaying.

When I went to see this, I really only wanted the wiring harness and forks and the rest got thrown in.

I know it has potential to be a money pit but hey - this is a hobby and playing with old motorcycles keeps me sane.

Alternatively I could just cut my losses and sell as the basis of a project for someone else to enjoy.

If I keep it - it won’t get cafe racered. Not because I don’t like them - but because I don’t have a cafe racer back anymore. I need something that’s half comfy these days.

I’ve only got a 29” leg so will struggle with a pukka off roader

Bit more rooting around my parts stash and I’ve got this far..

Could really do with a front wheel to make moving it around easier. It’s starting to get quite heavy.

I have got an original monolever seat, headlight and the brake calipers (not pictured)

Big ticket items missing are engine / gearbox / petrol tank

Once it’s a ‘roller’ I can make a decision.

Spookily I do have a spare G/S 3 bolt drive unit and swingarm.

That completely depends on how desperate you are to get hold of one

I’d say a very good hub with no real wear on the drum would be worth £500
Add in a good rim
Spokes
Rebuild.
A really nice one ought to fetch £750.
I’m lead to believe there is someone in the state’s re manufacturing them but can’t say I’ve seen a link anywhere.
At the end of the day,no back wheel ,no bike.

I have two R80G/S subframes that came with my other project.

Both had been chopped around.

One drastically shortened and the other had the top right mount where it meets the frame, cut off for some reason.

Decided to have a go at making one good one, but that would fit this monolever frame

Just waiting for a bit of mild steel bar to reinforce the join internally before I break the welder out.

I’ve got an ST seat so you can see the direction of travel (in my minds eye)

Sorry Bubb, just saw this.

Mine has under 1mm lip on the drum which can be readily removed on a decent lathe. the rim is ok but spokes are a bit gash so it could all do with a refurb. I’d let it go as is for £300.

I should really part with it but in my head it’s a resto mod ST.

Note the machined paralever rear hub. Picture this laced to a wider rim.

It’s all in my head at the moment with Mikey’s sage advice - it’s a money pit.

Current thinking is get it up on some wheels and decide
