Project Money Pit !

Thanks Mikey,

I’ve sent you a personal message re the parts you have.

I totally agree about the R80 motor but the R65 lump will mean my son can ride this (eventually) on his A2 licence.

It’s become a father / son project which is nice. He’s missing his old Yamaha which he sold last year and this will get him back on 2 wheels.

You’re just trying to get him hooked on airheads so you can sell him one or two of yours!

Sounds like a good bonding idea for you and son.

Finished stripping the engine and a bit more cleaning today..

Still got the inside to clean.

Very pleased with the all the bearing surfaces.

This engine was a real punt but I think the bones are good

Bit of progress on ‘money pits’ motor this morning.

Laying on its back while the crank gear gently simmers in the oven..

Next step is to get the engine covers cleaned and off to be powder coated.

The chassis now has a front wheel scored at a swap meet. It’s cosmetically challenged and needs new bearings but it was cheap. Just got to get a tyre on it and we have a roller

If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get the engine stand, its excellent.

Like the work on the sump too👍

The engine stand came from ‘Flatracer’

They were about £90 but look to have gone up a bit..

Looks like you could bolt it to the bench and fire the motor up!

I have got a home made box I hook up to test engines without need of a full wiring harness.

I’ll dig it out and post a picture.

Never thought of firing it on the bench though. There’s a lot of torque in those Bosch starters.

Likely a bit fruity without exhausts too.

You’ve got me thinking though 🤔

If your thinking of buying the Flatracer engine stand, I would say it’s very well made, but in my opinion, has a slight design flaw.

As stock, the oil filter is obstructed..

I modified it a little so the filter can accessed while still on the stand.

I did pass this on to Edgar at Flatracer but not sure if it’s been adopted.

Just something to be aware of before you get your wallet out

Now mentioned in the (updated?) sales notes.
And, as you say, price has gone up. £110

You haven’t seen money pit in a while.

Had to move it so snapped a shot off..

Never used it on the bench. I only ever used to start engines in bikes without a wiring harness or where the electrics were suspect.

I guess I could put some oil in the engine and just spin it over and see if I get oil pressure and coming out of the upper stud holes.

Could be messy though 🤔

So Money Pit has a used clutch set up, bolted up to the flywheel now.

These were part of the R65 stash of engine parts I got from Mikey 🙂

Cleaned up and pressed back into service.

Work on the engine has paused while I wait for the timing chain cover to come back from powder coating.

If the engine itself wasn’t a big enough punt - I found this gearbox on eBay and offered £100.

The seller doesn’t usually sell bike parts and couldn’t answer any questions except that it came out of a garage clearance.

It’s not here yet but my fingers are crossed that it’s useable
