Project Money Pit !

Moneypit moved under its own steam today.

A short ride thrrew up a couple of problems:

The gear lever needs adjusting
The front brake feels quite wooden - needs to bed in
Neutral switch still leaking - needs changing

Still got to make some fairing brackets.

Do you prefer it with nose fairing or without ?

I may have to reframe it 🤷🏻‍♂️

DVLA are being funny about me changing the engine capacity on the V5

Bet you all thought you’d heard the last of moneypit - but sadly no.

My son couldn’t get insurance on it because even though it has an R65 motor, it still shows up on databases as an R100 and he only has an A2 motorcycle licence.

Only one thing for it - frame swap

R65 frame arrived today.

Just got to strip moneypit down and rebuild it into this frame.

There is even talk of powder coating this frame. Watch this space.

What to do with the remaining R100 frame though ?

Money Pit is now partially stripped so that it can go to the powder coaters. Getting the steering lock out (no key supplied with the frame) required some drilling and percussive engineering.

Also spent a bit of time stripping and cleaning the original bean can (my good spare is currently fitted)

IMG_3447.jpeg

Getting those little springs back on the bob weights was an absolute mission.

I tested the hall unit as on closer inspection the external wires look to have been pinched at some point.

Sadly all the wiring tested good so a new part is required.

New Hall Effect sensor arrived today.

Here it is fitted into the body of the bean can..

And with the rotor refitted..

IMG_3458.jpeg

At this point I tested it with my home brewed device

Happy to report it’s seems to be working.

Refitted the end support and cap and it’s good to go.

Found a pretty useful video on YouTube but it’s a pretty straightforward, if not fiddly job,

In other news, the frame etc is at the powder coaters and may even be ready later this week 🤞

Whilst waiting for some parts to rebuild Money pit, I decided to try and build a working gearbox out of a box of shafts, bearings etc I bought recently at Kempton Park.

Try as I might, I couldn’t get the rear most shift fork on the output shaft to fit correctly.

This is what I had..

IMG_3471.jpeg

After much head scratching and examining part fiches, I twigged that 4th gear was fitted upside down !

Now reassembled..

IMG_3472.jpeg

It’s in the freezer now while I brew up and hopefully reassemble.

Moral of the story - I just cleaned it and stuck new bearings on but I should have fully stripped it. I accepted / assumed that because it was in one piece, it was correct.

The intermediate shaft that came with it looks good however 🤞

Wondering if that’s why it ended up for sale at an autojumble ?

Well this little tale now has a happy ending.

With the output shaft 4th gear flipped, everything assembled into the case smoothly and all gears select..

IMG_3473.jpeg

Measuring for shimming next but I don’t have a gasket, so that’s going to have to wait.

Work resumed on Moneypit today.

Started to build up the new frame..

IMG_3489.jpeg

Quite a lot of work cleaning out threaded parts to make sure all the bolts went in smoothly..

IMG_3490.jpeg

And at close of play today, I got this far..

IMG_3491.jpeg

Time for a tidy up and go again tomorrow

Looking good Pete.
Love the blue frame ( but owning a Basic I may be a little biased)

It's going to look really nice built up on that blue frame. I reckon you should invest in getting the wheels done in black (or silver) and the bodywork painted. It's turning into a really nice bike this 👍

Thanks for the inspiration guys.

It fought us a little today.

Making good progress then tried to fit the clutch pushrod and it wouldn’t go in past the swingarm 🙁

Nothing for it but to strip it all out and then refit.

The other ‘gotcha’ was forgetting to fit the fuel pipe under the airbox. Another step backwards to move forward.

The vibe of the bike is kind of ‘Basic’ and we chose the closet RAL colour we could find. Funds mean we’re not doing the rear shock spring or fork lowers in white at the moment.

We can always go back and do those later.

Undecided on wheel colour 🤔

End of play today..

Mk1 Moneypit frame - not much left now..

And that’s it until next weekend when we’ll take the front end out of one bike and transplant it into the other.
