Project Money Pit !

If not expensive.

A spoked front wheel should be straightforward enough but an 18” rear is a bit of an engineering mission
Not hard to achieve, but not cheap.
You need a paralever rear hub, iirc 16 mm machined of the mounting face,
Laced to a front rim of an R100r/ mystic
Or find someone who can lace an 18” centre spoke to a x spoke hub( it can be done)

I’ve got a G/s front wheel / forks.
Maybe a spoke front 19” as well
Thanks Mikey.

Not sure I’ve posted much about one of my other projects, but this Mono has an R1200C cross spoke front wheel with Ducati Monster 4 pot Brembo’s. Forks are stock Mono but reversed.

It currently has a stock Mono alloy rear wheel but I’ve got a R100R Mystic rear hub all machined and ready to go but no 18” rim.

Money pit still has no front end. Waiting for son to surface so we can crack on.

In the meantime done a little more on the spare engine and gearbox.

Here they are mated for the first time.

I thought, like this it would be easy to torque up the drive flange on the output shaft.

No way on my own. I’ve just been chasing it round the bench.

I’ve got a pair of R80 heads that need going through so that’s likely the next job.

This will keep me busy while I search for some suitable barrels and pistons.

Barrels and pistons?
What size are you looking for, as I have a set of r80 barrels and pistons that came with my basic ( basi has Siebenrock 1000 pistons) could be available to you at the right price……and I’ve still got the rocker covers you wanted!.

You have my attention 😉

V interested in those.

Will message you

Got the yokes, forks and front wheel back in.

Son spent some time re taping the loom in a few places where it was showing its age and where I had modded it.

Can’t get much further as the headlight bracket, handlebars and clamps are at the powdercoaters.

Once back on 2 wheels I took the opportunity to remove the sump and reseal it. It was previously fitted dry and had weeped a little when the engine was hot.

No horrors in the sump which was reassuring as this engine had a few new parts inside - big ends, timing chain etc. Nothing on the sump plug magnet.

I still think the fork lowers should be white but over ruled at the moment.

Fork lowers in white would match the “basic” colour frame…… maybe white wheels too….
Or blue wheels to match the frame?

My son picked up the next batch of powder coated parts on his way home from work today.

A lovely job too..

Except they powder coated where the twist grip goes, even though I had masked it off and explained why when it was left with them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Never mind. I’m sure we can sort it

Bit more work on the spare engine this morning.

I bought a job lot of R80 monolever engine parts some of which were really nice and some that just need a clean and refurbish. The stash only included 1 piston and maybe I can see why.

This rather scabby left side cylinder head was on the bench for inspection..

IMG_3712.jpeg

I knew it been in water (the seller told me the bike had been left outside and had succumbed to the elements) but there was more damage than anticipated when I began to clean it up..

IMG_3713.jpeg

Something has clearly been bouncing around in there ?

The 42mm inlet valve has taken a beating but the 38mm exhaust seems fine - weird 🤔

Majority of impact damage is in the lower portion of the combustion chamber.

It’s been twin plugged though !

Anyone got an inlet valve that needs a new home ?

Valve seats look fucked,
I recon it’s been sat full of water

I reckon you could be right about it being sat full of water. It was the left cylinder head and the accompanying left cylinder Nikasil coating has blistered. Likely it was left on the sidestand whilst outside ?

It would explain the deep pitting on the valve face, the lower part of the combustion chamber and the state of the cylinder.

The valve seats under the valve seem fine. The pitting is confined to what you can see.

It’s had a life that’s for sure

Any recommendations for valve seat replacement ?

No amount of lapping could get the inlet valve to seal on this seat.

The exhaust valve doesn’t leak but looks scabby.

Needs an exhaust valve guide and the rocker cover stud replacing too.

I’m not good at giving up - a bit of a blind spot for me.

I can spend hours trying to fix something rather than simply replace it.

Think I’d better dig out the right side head that came from the same bike and see what that’s like.
