PS2 Drama

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I am sure a mod will be along any time soon ....

I have recently purchased two official PS2 games (Call of Duty World at War Final Fronts and Delta Force Blackhawk Down Team Sabre) both programmed by Rebellion. Neither game will play on my machine.

Delta Force Blackhawk Down Team Sabre - when the machine is turned on it goes onto the main menu, create profile and the screen freezes.

Call of Duty World at War Final Fronts - turn the machine on, it goes onto the screen where it reads the memory card and it freezes.

I am unable to proceed beyond these screens. The machine is a SCPH - 50003 Serial Number FB0729750.
The bar code is: 20 - 27203561 - 0729750.

These games were bought by my son for his machine - I don't usually go anywhere the thing so have no idea.

The machine is not connected to the internet so this may be a case of outdated software? (struggles to sound like he knows anything ....)

Any help gratefully received (I have already sent a mail to the PS helpdesk).

it could be the laser head of the drive has gone out of alignment, there is instructions on how to do it if you do a google search for it, it is a bit of a faff though and not an exact science.
In truth it sorted my son's for a while but all it did was delay the inevitable and the drive had to be replaced in the end,

As far as I know the PS2 can't update via the internet, but if there was an update needed for any reason it's normally included on the game disc this is what they do with the PSP and PS3 so don't see any reason why they wouldn't do like wise for the PS2.

Sony's own site for the playstation is quite good at getting this sort of info, regarding updates

Forgot to mention that all of his other (older) games play perfectly ....

Is the machine one of the older (bigger) machines or a newer (smaller) K Series?

It is the older, bigger version. The ganes are fine on the slimmer version.

Problem now fixed - there is not enough memory for the newer games. All he needed to do was delete all the saved stuff on his memory card (plus I bought him a new one) and the games played perfectly.
