So my chain is f00ked and has destroyed my rear sprocket... lesson learnt on the chain, DID HD in the post.

Anyway, I need to get the front sprocket off of the output shaft, I remember the previous sprocket came off so easily... but the one I put on needed a bit of persuasion to get it on the shaft. And before you ask, no I didn't copper grease it. D'oh!

So here's the question, any recommendations for either slide hammers or sprocket pullers, what has worked for you guys? Anything I can buy in a shop (need asap)?

Cheers!

Yeah, I bought a three leg puller from Toolstation (cheap I'll give you that), snapped the thing clean in half.

Where can I get a slide hammer from, any recommendations based on this specific task?

I gave mine a liberal spraying with penetron left it a couple of hours and it pulled off no problem with the 3 leg puller however if its not working for you..

Machine Mart - Clarke CHT251 10-Pce Slide Hammer / Puller SetProduct Code: 040210251

I have read of others cutting it off with a dremel - I wonder how many cutting discs did that take.

Good luck

I've been spraying it with WD40 each day for a few nights now, put not massive amount of pressure on this puller and it snapped like a twig.

I do think the sprocket is stuck on there fast... might leave it on, put new chain + rear sprocket on, then replace it next week after I've got a slide hammer.

Don't use a slide hammer...you will fuck up you bearings...use a proper puller or cut it off...Don't use heat either or you will fuck up your seals...

You might be lucky and get away with it, How much is a secondhand gearbox ??
Why bodge it when you can do it properly , It will take the same amount of time.......

ILMV, hope you get your sprocket off with no damage.

I don't mean to hijack the post but you guys seem to have experience with different sprockets so perhaps you might know best.
Sooo, has anyone used a front sprocket with less than 16 teeth, say 14 or even 12 for the F800? I'd expect the handling to be more subdued on the tighter stuff off road with a smaller cog at the front ....but then the effect could prove negligible with a bike with more than 80 horses. Was considering a change to a smaller cog before my trip to Morocco. Not bothered about losing cruising speed in 6th gear.

Anyone tried?

Cheers

Check out ADV - as i recall they tend to go up at the back rather than down on the front.

Been running 15 on the front of my 08 since it was three weeks old. Much more manageable in the muck, 55mpg, 120 with no huge effort, and cruises at well below redline.

Three up on the rear is another option, but it was much easier at the time to pull off the front than it was to strip out the rear, since noone knew what equivalents were at the time.

Ah bollocks... how do they do this in the dealer, just a proper heavy duty puller?

The dealers use a specific kinda white grease, don't know the technical name, sprockets just pull right off, easy like :D

It's what ya pay for

:beerjug:

Edit .... and copperlip is NOT the right stuff!

Edit edit .... the grease is E X P E N S I V E but with 85,000 miles and several sprockets fitted there has not been a problem ;)

It pays to know the right dealer, doesn't it Mick

A real dealer, who knows bikes and what they're talking about;)

How about remove and grease at every service, if done from new it should be pretty easy. It would take only a few minutes and save a lot of bother.
