Went to go for a ride from home this afternoon... took bike off centrestand and realised the rear tyre was punctured.
On inspection there is a nail-type piece of metal between the blocks.

Options seem to be... use BWM puncture kit and ride to repairer... in my case preferably Micheldever Tyres... about 25/30 miles away.
Never used kit before so not sure whether it will seal OK and whether it might let me down.
OR

take rear wheel off and take to Micheldever... ABS/Servo 1150.

I'd appreciate any advice/recommendations.

Thanks MD.

Try and fix it

You've owt to lose, ride gently to your tyre place.

If the tyre blows, I wouldn't say don't worry, but when mine at about 45 50 mph, the bike kept stability quite well.

If the fix pops, then go to your option 2.

Obviously attempt the above if you're considering replacing the tyre

Had the same thing a few months ago on the way back from Wales.( on a Sunday )

It was a slow puncture so just nipped into garages on way back and used their airline.

I took the wheel off mine and took it to local bike shop only to be told they couldn't repair it due to nail being too close to tyre wall.

So it would have been a different story if I took the bike down as I would have had to leave it there until a new tyre came.

There was still 5mm of tread left too.:shoot:

As for the repair kit....I have not used it either yet. I suppose I should have had a practise while I had a duff tyre.;)

I spotted a nail in "Jon's" rear tyre somewhere in Spain last month, so I fixed it with the BMW puncture repair kit. He then rode the bike for about another 600 miles without any further problems.

You really MUST open the hole with the tool supplied so that it's about 4 mm in dia. or the plug will not go in. Also make sure you slap plenty of the glue on the tool and plug, then put it in the hole quickly before it sets.

New bike (from SPC) add 80 miles, find one big nail, mix with 1 rear tyre, and hey presto a puncture.

Using the BMW repair, worked fine to get me back to SPC, for a new tyre. I was about 45 miles from SPC at the time. If I'd been closer I'dve gone to Micheldever too.

The Kit was fine for the use I gave it. Although I must admit to a certain level of trepidation for the ride back.

The hole in the tyre took 2 of the rubbber thingies to plug it, but it certainly got me sorted.

I bought another kit for future 'Adventures'...... just in case.

Hi, If you recall I had a puncture a few weeks ago, failed miserably in using the puncture repair kit, so drove the wheel to Micheldever, and cost £15 for the repair.

I think I'm tempted to try the tyre repair tomorrow (as I'm home) and see how it goes... if it works and it is still up on Monday I'll risk a ride over to Micheldever (having called them first to make sure they have a replacement available if required).

If it goes flat before Monday.. it's a no brainer.

The nail is between the blocks pretty much in the centre of the tyre so I'm hoping it will be repairable.

I presume by having a go at the temporary repair I won't be reducing the chance of a permanent repair being possible.

Hope not as I estimate the tyre is probably good for another 2-3000 miles.

Thanks for the replies.

As I had a pint in my hand, I "let" Roy show me how to repair it :D, while I took piccies - I rode from Guadalajara to Santander. Plymouth to home, then home to Dorchester. As Roy says, some 600 miles.

We'll get round to putting them on the "how to" section at some time.

If the tyres foobar'd, you've got nothing to loose.

Just done the repair... so far it has stayed up and the "soap and bubble" test show no signs of any leaks... so Monday it's off to Micheldever.

It was easier than I expected (famous last words!).

The bit of metal I pulled out was frightening though.... about 3 inches long with a bit of a bend in it... looked like a bit of metal coathanger:(

Thanks for all the help and encouragement...

Update... Good news.. Bad news

The good news
The tyre stayed inflated for the 30 mile journey to Micheldever Tyres.
Also, having used the kit I feel more confident in having the possibility to do a roadside repair.

The bad news
It wasn't repairable. Although the puncture wasn't out by the sidewall, it was sufficiently off-centre that they wouldn't repair it.
Also, there was another piece of metal in another part of the tyre that I hadn't spotted (but must have been airtigh for the moment).

So bad news resulted in a new rear Tourance costing £92.82 (on a ride in/ride out basis).

Have to say I was very impressed with Micheldever, very professional set up and took good care of the bike.

Now I have to replenish the BWM repair kit.... more glue, and air cartridges.
Does anyone know if you can buy these separately?

If not I see Hein Gericke have a kit by Rema which is the same as the one with my 1150. It costs £12.99.
