If it's in the 1200 section then seemingly no question is too inane.

i put £15 of petrol in my 12 then went to the Ace Cafe and back.
Now i have no petrol

Conversely, I've not ridden the GS for over a week now. I've just been out to check and there is still the same amount of fuel in the tank as there was when I put it away in the garage

Any way, to get this thread back on track;

Dear Ash

You're clearly new to both motorcycling and this forum. Allow me to help.

Petrol is a volatile hydrocarbon which is prone to evaporation. as you ride, the airflow exacerbates this this, leading to so-called 'petrol consumption'. Some here will tell you that the engine burns this petrol, but, like tightening corners, this is actually an urban myth. There is no actual fire, you see.

Make sure you only replace it with proper BMW petrol from your main dealer. It's pricier but keeps your initial warranty intact.
