I've just tried to repair a puncture (thankfully at home!) with one of these kits:
http://shop.touratech.co.uk/tubeless-tyre-puncture-repair-kit.html

I pulled the screw out; reamed the hole out with the tool; covered the plug with cement but every time I tried to insert a plug it just tore in two before it went into the tyre.
What am I doing wrong?
and/or
Is there a better kit on the market that I can get in preparation for a summer trip?

Thanks for any help/advice

Check the inserter for sharp internal edges
Are you allowing the solution to become too tacky
There are rats tails which I think are better than those TT plugs, cheaper too.

So there you have it..... Take note of the constructive advice. Easy to find on t'Internet, if you refine your search to 'A PROPER KIT'.

Crafty plugger.

Google it.

Simple and it works.

Don't forget (many do) that you'll need to reinflate the tyre.

Despite any success claims, Id feel uncomfortable riding a bike with a repaired puncture. Id consider it as a repair tool to just get me home/ to the garage, but id want to be getting a new tyre fitted asap. But then again, I'm a bit weird.

I repaired a puncture to my 1150 when on holiday in Southern Spain..

I then went on to do a further 2000 miles before wearing the tyre out.. no problems. I used a 'Plug n Go' kit.. I've also repaired car and 4x4 tyres with the same kit, with no problems.

I certainly wouldn't be getting a new tyre just because of a puncture, unless of course it was near/in the wall.

I'd always sworn by the Tyre Plugger kits and 'permanently' fixed many punctures with them, then I had a bolt go through a rear tyre in Ireland a couple of years ago.

The tyre plugger wouldn't seal it even if I tried a couple of plugs, luckily Aidan had some Rat's Tails which sorted it so I carry both now. Tyre Plugger for your normal nail punctures etc. and the other for anything naughtier.

As for tyre walls, forget it, stick a tube in:beerjug:

Thanks for the suggestions.
I assume that the "rats tail" kits are this kind of thing:

...which seems to be available for about a fiver....... or in a nice pouch for with CO2 canisters for £20-£30!

Anyone tried these:

One vote for this one already:

I've used the stop and go pocket tire plugger on a GS1200A successfully - very easy to use.

Have a Stop & Go kit, apparently they're very good on regular punctures. Despite 6 of us on tour last year and a number of ride-outs since no one has had the good grace to get a puncture so I can test it. One guy ran over a rock and wrote-off the wheel, found a replacement in mid France and refitted the tyre... Having new tyres fitted this week so no doubt I'll pick up a nail or screw shortly afterwards

I have two of the stop and go kits. One on the bike and the other in the car. It's actually quicker to use the kit that put the spare wheel on. Fixed a puncture in my last car and it was there for 20000 miles with no problems, not even the slowest of slows. Had 2 in the bike and both were in for around 4000 miles, again with no problems. I carry co2 cylinders on the bike for tyre inflation.

The biggest and most common problem is that having pulled out the nail or screw the hole is too small, and the plug won't go in. The hole wants reaming out so that the plug can be inserted with just a little resistance ....

Used the BMW 'Rima' kit dozens of times for myself and people I've been training or touring with, for over twenty years, with 99.99% success :thumb

With the upper 'rat's tail' in the picture. Take some care that you are not buying the very nasty Chinese copy of the original.

Safety Seal, an American company, make the authentic version. They have (or at least had) UK distributors.

Aha, they still do...

They have improved their website since I bought mine, from the same very helpful bods in Suffolk. I had to track them down via Sweden.

Im struggling to find the Rima kit, can't find it online for some reason? Is this the same kit? http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?23619-Fixing-a-puncture-with-the-BMW-repair-kit

Interesting link, I hadn't seen that.
The Rema/BMW kit is the one I struggled with. Looking at that guide I suspect that I didn't make the hole big enough before trying to insert the plug. The plug was just torn apart by the insertion tool when I tried to force into the tyre. It's a shame that the instructions make no mention of this - they simply say that the kit is for repairing holes of up to 4mm.
Got it plugged from the inside at a local tyre place today.

I've fixed a hole caused by a 6mm bolt with Wellseal - now called Puncturesafe. I intended to get it vulcanised but never got around too it and did about 5000 miles on the tyre with no problems. When it was changed I looked for the hole and couldn't find it.

Strangely I got this puncture only a couple of days after fitting a pair of Garmin tyre pressure sensors. Nice to know about it before I set off rather than a couple of miles down the road.
The trouble is that the battery cap flew off the front sensor on my first ride. No reply from Garmin yet about a replacement cap - looks like that was a very quick £40 down the tubes!

Not bought one recently 'cos I'm now on tubed tyres ... But the BMW one, from your friendly dealer, badged 'BMW' is the Rima kit. Came out best in a RiDE review some time ago and actually cheaper from your errr mmmm friendly BMW dealer than Halfords and the like :nenau

I still keep one in my VW campervan to help a stranded biker :thumby:

:beerjug:

Edit ... reason for not buying one recently 'cos when I've used the kit for someone else in distress they've replaced it for me from their errr mmm local friendly BMW dealer :D
