What are peoples attitude to a front tyre puncture? Repair or replace.
The roofing nail is just off the centre line and not leaking at the moment. If it was on the rear I would have no hesitation in a repair. On the front, not so sure.

Pull the nail and plug it

It will be fine

What's the worst that can happen

A good repair will be fine, once the nail is removed the rubber will close up, get a tyre fitter to plug it glue it and it wear the same as the other parts of the tyre.

Unless you are racing around on track, general road use you will be okay.

UPDATE on puncture thread from yesterday.

Sorry but I don’t seem to be able to alter the header with “Update” added.

Both my wife and I are into our 70s and are planning one more long camping trip.
We have been over Europe including to the very far north of Norway and up into the Himalayas 3 times, though those trips were on rented RE 500 bikes.

As this is possibly our last major trip (other than the Tesco adventure), I put on new tyres a week or so ago. We got the puncture on our 2014 GS LC yesterday. To be fair it is not leaking. Anyway my good lady feels that we should change the tyre rather than repair it as it is on the front wheel.

Anyway it is only the kids inheritance!!!

The tyre is a Continental Trail Attack 3 has done only 248 miles since fitted.

Does any one want the tyre (totally free). You would have to repair it.

I am based near Tavistock in Devon and am quite prepared to meet someone part way 30 odd miles from Tavistock.

The bike is in to have the new tyre fitted on Tuesday so I would need to know beforehand to tell the guys that I want the old one back.

Cheers.

Is it a nail? Is it something else? Has it actually gone trough the tyre? Looks like something pluggable to me. If you don’t feel comfortable with a plug a repair from the inside would make it as good as new. JJH

It looks like a roofing nail to me.
Where I parked the bike yesterday there were builders removing lead flashing, to I guess the culprit is a galvanised roofing nail. If this nail was holding up lead flashing then it will have gone through. Never saw it.
Still I think that it will be repairable (or I would not offer it) but if my good lady is concerned about it then it will be changed. If it had happen on a long trip I would have pulled it out and plugged it. I carrying those externally fitted plug + inserter.

I would have it and would pay for postage if that's OK with you?
Thanks Karl.

AS above, just get it professionally plugged from the inside, the tyre repairer wouldn't do the job if it was't safe.

You change a tyre because you are going on a longer continental trip? What are you saying, there is more chance of a puncture outside of the UK, they do not sell tyres outside of the UK, there are no tyre places outside of the UK?

Because the tyre now has a known potential issue.

It will probably be fine for the trip but SMB doesn't want to take the risk of it potentially buggering up 1 or two days of his planned trip.

He's happy to replace it and Karl P is happy with his new acquisition.

I explained, in post 4, that my pillion is not happy starting out with a repair on the front wheel. End of.
