Hi guys.....

Todays GS question....

I have large/ish hands and want to build up the grip thickness.
Can I or has anyone put new grips on top of the BMW heated grips?

I used to use the BAJA type foam grips years ago as i get cramp from them being to small.
Any ideas appreciated.
Cheers... :thumb

I haven't used rubber ones but I have fitted foam grip puppies for the same reason with no problems, heated grips work fine with them.

Do the foam grips help with the "numb finger"?

I used a red rubber criçket bat handle replacement the one with small nobbles on it - worked a treat

+1 for grip puppies, the heated grips still work fine and it saves wearing out the stock grips, also have XXL hands so they are ideal.

So what did you use to install the puppies over the stock grips? Hairspray?

Grip "buddies" might be worth looking at...........they just wrap around and velcro on the grip.

If you want something a little thicker then 'grip buddies' (neoprene) wrap around and secure with sticky strip and velcro.

I'm using the Nippy Norman wrap around grips. More expensive than grip buddies, but supposed to last longer.
I've had Carpel Tunnel for a while now and it's not the (slight) reduction in vibration that helps, but the fact that you don't need to curl your hand around the grip as much. Much more comfortable with them.
I find that having an extra layer makes the heated grip less fierce on the high setting. Not a bad thing as I feel that the heated groups can make my Carpel Tunnel worse.

I put some 3mm soft sorbothane over the grips with snooker cue heat shrink sleeve over that.
It adds 6 or 8mm to the grip diameter but I find the standard grips a bit thin & hard.

My lead shot filled handlebars and heavy bar end weights have helped with vibrations.
I get carpal tunnel symptoms but (in my case) the cause is first rib and low neck issues.

I use grip puppies. I found the stock grips too small, maybe because I am used to inch bars with foam grips?

The grip puppies just slip over the stock grips and make it that bit thicker and more comfy on a long trip. No problems with the heat from the grips getting through over the winter, you might lose a small amount but nothing noticeable. I haven't noticed any slipping on the twist grip, the MOT man noticed them, then said that they were OK as they were covers.

Grip puppies, about £12. Use hairspray as a lubricant to fit. Easy.

Comberjohn, had surgery on both wrists over the winter relieve carpel tunnel issues, since the surgery I have had no tingling or numbness on either hand either at work or on the bike, if this is an option for you I would recommend it.

Thanks, Al. It's not a massive problem, yet. Would like to put off surgery as long as possible and have heard that is not always a success.
Have a wrist splint that keeps the wrist from bending while sleeping. Just realised that I haven't had to use it since I've started to use the grip buddies!

I was told that the more severe the symptoms the longer and more painful the recovery as more work is needed to be done to clean out the tunnel area, my surgery was virtually painless and was using hand within a few days for light tasks and back on the bike within a month.

Wish i could go down the CT route,

My symptoms are due to compressing & displacing my C4 disk & chipping a lump off the C5

might have to invest in a set of grip buddies
