went into dealers to book my 08 gsa in for fuel gauge strip repair and a gaiter replacement (it just decided to pop out because the plastic retaining clip snapped) i was then told it would be £93 fitting plus part £34 for the gaiter which cost probably £2 to make and then £200 for the fuel strip inc fitting. has anyone had a goodwill repair on the pathetic fuel gauge problem? i know people put up with not having a gauge but its a £13000 bike for godsake and its the yellow warning triangle what pisses me off. after a bit of a rant in the dealers thay said that the problem is that bmw are sourcing stuff (shite!) from the far east and as a result the quality has suffered

Had the same problem with a 1200rt.BMW mechanic said that he took the strip out, dried it off ,put it back in the tank and hey presto, good as new.No charge, still working 30k mls. later.

Take out the exteneded warrenty and then get it fixed, I know you shouldn't have to but a bike warretny from new is only 2 years (unbeknown to me)

Mine is a 08 GSA and ive just had the fuel gauge and the rear shock replaced under warranty, so ive got this years money out of them so far :D

Incredibly my fuel gauge has just packed up on an 08 GSA too..

I smell a rat! Booking it into rainbows soon for a service, will discuss with them - unless someone knows how easy it is to remove and refit?

this is component failure due to poor quality materials, design and manufacture and should have been remedied through recalls years ago not over priced extended warranties and would have been if they had listened to its loyal band of enthusiasts, you don't get these problems on bikes costing half the price, i rang BMW customer services and spoke to a guy who was very helpful and hopefully my problem might be solved foc
still doesn't detract from the fact that the bikes a pile of crap

Don't worry guys my 59 Gs is going in for the second time for the fuel gauge.:blast The last time they did it last September it only lasted 3 Fills and it packed in again. I just haven't been arsed to get it done but the yellow triangle is pissing me off now:(
Can't book it in to Riders in Cardiff until June 2nd as they are too busy :nenau

Yep, Vines of guildford charged £60 to replace with BMW paying for a new strip and half the labour.....on an 08 GS...in Feb out of warranty....Bahnstormers Alton on the other hand didn't want to know and said they couldn't get a good will agreement...go figure.:nenau

we should get a petition together to get them to sort the dam fuel gauge, rear shocks, final drives, brake warps and all the other toss parts that keep failing :comfort

thats the problem the dealers have sold that many gsa's to wannabee charlie n ewans in their twat suits they cant be arsed with pursuing goodwill out of warranty claims as it doesnt bring in the £93 hourly rate of service costs so they try to fob you off so you have to pay through the nose and this was confimed to me today by customer services what they fail to realise is that the charlie n ewan brigade are a fickle bunch and slow but sure gsa's are becoming very uncool

not sure about that, because there are lots of users on here that never have any problems so it would be a hard one to prove... on the other hand some people on here have actually sold there GS because of constant parts failing :toungincheek and shit customer service, not to mention the price of the dam bike

Mine's going in for the fuel gauge as well. Just shows permanently full so not an issue with the yellow triangle. I have the Ex warranty and also want the rear shock tested as I have my doubts about it. 2008 GS with 16500m on the clock. It also left me with no power in the middle of traffic in town with only 2000m on the clock - FPC replaced,,,,,,,

Any reason given why the FPC failed, this is another common fault too that's seems to fail randomly...

My fuel gauge packed in again last week, whilst in France, ( it happened the first time just after I purchased the bike).
The sensor had packed in, had it replaced under ext-warranty. Need to fill her up and check all is OK in the next few days.

But I agree it is a pain having the red warning triangle always in your peripheral vision whilst riding.

im demoing the new 990 smt tomorrow and going by the reviews they are great fun, im going to have a change, after 3 gs/gsa's in 5 years we've become a joke premium brand, premium price rubbish

I rode the Triumph 800 Tiger XC briefly and thought it was superb for its lightweight and manoeuvrability, don't think ill buy another BMW bike, saying that where is that review that compared GSA, Multistada and Yamaha the GSA came out on top.. even if the parts are cheap tatty poop :D

thats complete bollocks i wouldnt buy a paper clip from bahnstormers certainly not a bike, and vines owe you £60 this is what bmw customer services told me yesterday : it is not us but the DEALER who makes the decision on goodwill repairs for known problems/faults and in 99.9% we will back their decision: un quote

shit gs1200 adventure

i agree with above, im sick of my BMW, my fuel gauge has failed twice,
the finish is shit, for god sake i bought it as i thought german engineering wouldn't let me down. how wrong i was.
I was sat in traffic the other day & i glanced at myself in a shop window in my bmw 'suit' & i thought, what a frigging prick you look, somebody bounced a rotten tomato off my head the other day & im constantly getting 'wanker' signs, i cant cope any longer, i think ive shook my mid life crisis off so im going to buy a tiger 1050 abs,

Must admit I like the look of the SMT, however a word of caution, its not just the GS which has problems, coincidently I saw an owner of a new SMT at a 'venta' (cafe) in a forest near Ubrique, Spain, on Monday, he was waiting for a tow truck which had just arrived as I got there.
A friend of mine has a new KTM RC8 which is now six months old. The last 3 months it has spent in the dealers with a problem that it will no longer accelerate beyond 7000 RPM in any gear. The dealer has tried everything to repair it including running it on a Dyno to replicate the fault, but they can't fix it. He even offered the Spanish dealer cash on top to buy another bike, but nothing doing. The dealer is in Contact with KTM who have no answers yet apparently. In the meantime the guy has no bike.

I suppose the morale is: no matter what make it is or how much it costs, if they make enough of them, some will turn out to be lemons.

Reason not given other than faulty unit. However, there has been a recall since. When I queried this I was assured that my new unit was the latest.......
