If I still have the 5 and 6 mapsource/city select installed on the pc, which was for my Garmin V, can it be used with the Quest? or do I need to uninstall and then reinstall the new mapsource?

And after trying to read the manual, (don't know why I bother) do I need to install (on the pc) the mapsource for the Quest or is all the mapping that comes pre-installed in the unit, enough to use? what is the c/d mapsource for, does it have greater detail, than the pre-installed mapping.?

If you still have the second unlock available for your existing City Select v5/6 then you could log on to the Garmin site and obtain an unlock code to use with the new Quest.

You can just enter the unlock code that came in the box for the Quest. The only problem you may have is with the USB connection.

I had CS 4, 5 and 6 installed on my PC but decided to uninstall and start from scratch as all those maps take up a lot of HDD space.

If you have a pre-installed Quest that will be sufficient for use in the UK but if you decide to venture further afield or start loading waypoints and routes you'll need to use mapsource to transfer these.

So I cannot increase the detail in the mapping that is already installed on the quest, by installing the ms on the pc, so is it worth registering the unit or not?, is that just for warranty and upgrade.

Not if it's already loaded with full navigation etc. but it will allow you to load maps for other countries. Personally, I'd install Mapsource and City Select again, install the Garmin updates available from their website and then reload the maps of my choice. It's also worth updating the Quest unit itself.

No gain in registering. You can do all the above without registering but as you say, for warranty and upgrades you will need to. City Select 7 is out and I suppose we could get that for free if we register now but I'm considering holding out for v8 next January as v6 seems pretty good for my needs.
