Question for 1100 riders in winter

Just wondered how "good" the 1100 is meant to be in this weather?

Is half choke the norm or full choke.

I had half choke on this morning for about 45 secs while I put on me gloves, revs were 1,200 and when I got on to ride away....she stalled.

I'll try full choke tomorrow but just wondered how many people use it?
or have I got a problem here?
 
I never use the 'choke'... nor do i ever have the bike running and not moving. (except for servicing)

all ready to go.. sidestand up. start the engine... wind up the throttle slightly into gear and away.


bear in mind that the 'choke' on these bikes is just a mini throttle - nothing more - nothing less.

The choke isn't a choke.... all it does is open the throttle body buterflies to lift the revs, it doesn't alter the fuel/air mixture.

So half choke full choke..... makes no difference ;)

Yeah i know it's not a real choke but don't know what you call it otherwise.
Spose my question is then:

Should it be almost on stall from cold or is there something to investigate,
what sort of manual revs are you guys using to pull away at cold?

I kind of need 2000+
 
I've yet to have a problem.. as has been said its not even cold yet. when its sub-zero then more revs... but cant say its something i'm 'consciously aware of doing' if that makes sense.
 
My 1150's a bit more liable to stall now it is cooler. Is simply a mater of a few more revs and some clutch control to get off the mark up the sloping drive.]

Shouldn't be an issue, other than retraining the mind...

Lucy's 90,000 mile 1100 is quite happy to idle with no choke from cold.
My 60,000 mile 1100 needs a little choke while I'm putting my gloves on, otherwise it would probably stall..... once moving I knock it off straight away :thumb2

Interesting, I guess they can all end up as individual as "folk"

When it gets really cold, I always used to half cover the oil cooler with tin foil, bit like with cars in the old days.

not being funny - but I'm at a loss to understand how that can affect cold starting.
 
Mine was just like yours needing "choke" etc, I had it serviced by Ian at Church Stretton Motorcycles (ex-bmw main agents) and it’s a totally different bike now, to be honest I just can't believe its the same bike, I was ready to sell it before the service but not after... I think he ended up replacing the TPS as it was giving an intermittent fault of some kind as well as resetting other stuff in the service?

I wonder if that actually harks back to a time when cars didn’t have thermostats…
 
nah, i used to do that when i was young on my tzr 125 for the long ride to work in the winter, worked a treat :) :thumb2
 
they have a choke then........
doesnt normally get cold enough to bother with :rob..... just wipe the ice/frost off the seat and go:cool:
 
My 1100, which is now on 77000 miles, has always needed the lever opened for the first few hundred yards otherwise it stalls or is extremely lumpy - like at the end of my drive leaving for work or the work's exit leaving for home. Neither road is one to pull out onto only to find the engine's decided not to play!
 
don't bother get yer gear on start up and ride off better to warm up on the move
