Sorry, I know there are shed loads of oil threads but... would there be a problem using Fuchs (Silkolene) Titan supersyn 5W-40 ACEA A3/B3/B4 API CF/SJ in the boxer engine?

My brief understanding is that 5W-40 would be OK for temperature range and the API SJ exceeds the BM spec of SF, SG, SH but what about the CF bit? This obviously isn't the CD or CE specified by BM. Any ideas if this cause problems.

TIA

Adam :)

I'm no oil guru but as I understand it the SJ is too high spec for the antique boxer engine - I was advised to stick with SG and not go above.....
I can't tell you exactly what this means in terms of wear on the slippery bits but at the time it made sense so I stick with that and it has been OK for 77000kms so far.

In practise there wouldn't be a problem at all.

Just drain your old oil out and change the filter when sticking fully synthetic in.

If the engine has reasonable mileage on it - say 5k plus then its pretty much run-in and synth will last longer between intervals.
Change the oil and filter every 10k (min) otherwise you're wasting the benefits.

Specs above SG have friction modifiers that will nadger a wet-plate clutch. Since the Beemers (apart from the 650s) have dry clutches, this isn't an issue.

Castrol - Cambridge

This is a subject long debated in these halls, but the concensus seemed to be Castrol GPS for the engine, and Castrol MTX for the transmission and gearbox. Bearing in mind that their distribution centre is in Cambridge, maybe you should give them a try ?

You're a star :) I'd reached the same conclusion, GPS and MTX, but couldn't find a local distributor... doh! Swavesey is less than 5 miles from me.

The reason for the original question was down to having access to the above oil at a silly cheap price.

Cheers

Briefly, when the bottle says CF/SJ, the 'S' refers to spark ignition engines (petrol) and the 'C' refers to compression-ignition engines (diesel). Therefore, the spec to watch for is whatever follws the 'S'. SJ is probably too good, but if you're getting it at the right price it won't do any harm. I personally wouldn't use it if the engine has done less than about 12,000 miles - still not fully 'loosened-up'.

Thanks for all replies.

Littleredrooster, The bike's just coming up for 30k so no problem on that count.
