Question for the radio anoraks......

Right I've got a US spec Kenwood TK3101 and an antenna from Ken Godwin.

Can I use this antenna with one of the Puxing 888's?

I suppose the main question I'm asking is this. I believe the radio is tuned to 464.7747MHz & 463.4497MHz. Would the antenna I have be cut to a certain length as to work with these two frequencies?

So presuming (hoping) the Kenwood has an SMA female (which I think the Puxing has), are there any issues with connecting this antenna to the Puxing?

So hopefully at a minimum, the external antenna should work if I program the Puxing to operate on the above frequencies. So what if I wanted to program the radio to EU frequencies, would the same antenna work? Or would I need to trim the antenna to an optimum length?

I know the fact that I'm using an external antenna is illegal in the UK. Dunno the rules in Ireland to be honest.

Is the antenna a moulded black rubber type with the sma connector at the bottom?

Or like these?

are you connecting the antenna directly to the radio? If not you just use an appropriate mount with the right connector for the radio............if you are you can by sma to whatever adaptors ....I use an sma to bnc adaptor and its fine.

The moulded rubber antennas may be wideband enough to cope with 446 and 464 mhz,the supplier should be able to tell you.

I use various UHF standard antennas at 446 without problem but they will be uk spec cut for 430-440mhz ham band.

There was a post where I linked the little black magmount in the piccy to a website where it can be bought and I posted cutting length for 446 mhz...........but darned if I can find it.

I suppose I best email Ken and see will the antenna work on all frequencies without modification.

Half wave whip.

It has a 15mhz bandwidth and can be cut for anywhere between 380 and 470 mhz

If he has cut it for 446 then it will be within tolerance from 439 to 453 ish

it will work at 464 however your voltage standing wave ratio will probrably be higher than the 1.5 to 1 quoted.

get someone with a uhf vswr meter to check it,if its less than 2:1 you can probrably live with it and use it for both bands


If its not cut yet ,see if you can have it centred on approx 455 mhz( if it is cut for 446 you can still trim it down in length which raises the resonant frequency) if its cut for 464 ...sorry it will be too short to adjust down in frequency.................... 455 is mid point between the eu pmr and us frs frequencies and it should cover both but will be slightly out of the 1.5:1 vswr tolerance
